TENT
HITCH-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,038, dated January 9, 1900.
' Application filed February 20, 1899. Serial No. 706.168. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MADISON W. REEVES, a citizen of the United States, residiu g at Sayre, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hitch-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hitch-hooks,and pertains to a hook constructed to be attached to a rope by means of a halfhitch, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a device so constructed that a rope can be attached thereto by a half-hitch or double in the rope and when so attached held against longitudinal movement upon the rope, the construction being such that it can be attached to the rope at any desired point and adjusted thereon as convenience may require.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, the rope being shown in position thereon. Fig.2 is a similar view with the rope removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view looking at the device from the opposite side of that shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the body portion of the device, which terminates, preferably, in the form of a hook B, though this end of the device may be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. My invention pertains to the particular construction of the opposite end of the body A, wherein it is provided with a spirally-arranged shoulder a and a loop or U-shaped end I). This shoulder a begins at the point cl and extends around the body A, as illustrated, and across the face or 40 side of the end of the body A, as illustrated at c. It will be noted that the hook or U -shaped end I) extends in a plane beyond the plane of the end d of the spiral shoulder, whereby the rope will pass under the hook.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the rope passes in a loop'aroundin front of the spirally-arranged shoulder and across the end of the body A, while the other portion of the double or half-hitch of the rope passes over that part of the rope which crosses the end of the body A and underthe loop or U-shaped end 19, whereby the pull upon the hook will cause the rope to be held tightly against slipping, and the harder the pull the more tightly the rope is held.
A device as above described is simple in construction, cheap to make, and effective in its operation.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an article of manufacture, a rope-hitch comprising a hook having its shank formed with a spiral shoulder from which projects a longitudinally-extending arm, said arm being at one side of the center of the shank and terminating at its end in a downwardly-project'- ing hook which is in alinement with the said shank, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
MADISON W. REEVES.
