Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1917.
Application led January 25, 1915. Serial No. 4,292.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. BRION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galeton, in the county of Potter, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a package tie.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be very simple in construction and yet which will be exceedingly eiiicient in use.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that when in place upon a package the cord which is attached thereto will tend to draw the device more tightly in contact with the package as the force appliedto the cord is increased.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device attached to a package, showing the arrangement of the cord thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views:
The device comprises a shank 1 which is formed from a piece of wire bent upon itself so as to form an eye 2 in one end thereof.
The ends of the wires at the other end of the shank 1 are turned downwardly, as indicated at 3. The wires then diverge and are looped back upon themselves to form eyes 4 and a consequent slot 5 between the said eyes in which the end of the cord which encircles the package is adapted to be located as will later appear.
The device is made of resilient wire so that when the cord is inserted in the slot 5 it will be clamped therein.
In use a piece of cord is engaged in the eye 2 of the device and the device upon the package which is to be tied so that the shank portion 1 engages the said package, the cord is then passed about the package at right angles to the length of the said shank and is then looped over the portion of the cord adjacent the eye 2 as indicated at L and then passed about the package at right angles to the direction in which it is first passed about the package, the free end of the cord is then passed aroundthe downwardly turned portion 3 and then drawn into the slot 5 and is held therein by the reslliency of the material of which the device is constructed, the device is then turned to such position as shown in Fig. 1 so that the possibility of the cord becoming caught and disengaged from the slot will be very small.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A device of the character described comprising a single strand of wire bent to form a loop intermediate of its ends, .a pair of legs extending from said loop in parallel relation, and bent in a plane at right angles to the plane of said loop, a hook formed by bending said parallel legs backwardly upon themselves, and oppositely disposed loops formed by bending the said parallel legs in opposite directions, the free ends of said legs terminating at opposite sides of the hook.
