Description

' J. HEBERLING.
ROPE TIE.
APPLIUATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1911.
Patented Aug. 5, 1913.
woeuto'o JOHN HEBERLING, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
ROPE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 11, 1911.
Patented Aug. 5,1913. Serial No. 648,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEBERLING, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rope-Ties, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to rope ties and an object thereof is to simplify the construction of such devices so that an inexpensive and durable article is provided.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a tie embodying the present invention with the main loop in closed position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the manner of forming the loop; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the small loop showing the retaining device in operative position.
In carrying out the invention a piece of rope, cable or other flexible material 1 is bent preferably at one end to provide a loop 2, the parts forming the loop being held together in any suitable manner as by eyes or staples 3.
Pivotally supported on one arm of the loop is a retainer comprising preferably an eye 4 surrounding one arm of the loop and a hooked free end 5 for detachably engaging with the opposite arm of the loop. Of course, the rope is passed through the eye 4 before the loop 2 is formed.
In using the tie, the rope is bent between its ends as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a small loop 6 which is passed through the loop 2 while the retainer is raised or has its hook disengaged from the loop 2. The retainer i then swung between the arms of the loop M Copies of this patent may be obtainedfor five cents each, by addressing 6 so that its hooked end engages the loop 2, and the rope is pulled to tighten the loop 6 over the retainer. Then the hooked portion is in engagement with the loop 2 so that the opposite walls of the latter are held against spreading, the distance between the opposed faces of the loop 2 being at this time slightly less than the diameter of the rope, so that those portions of the rope passed through the loop 2 are frictionally held by such loop to prevent the slipping of the tie. The top of the retainer may be roughened as with sharp corners at 7 which give additional friction and act to prevent the slipping of the tie.
A rope tie constructed in accordance with this invention is simple in its operation and is very inexpensive to manufacture. The construction is durable and all slipping is prevented. Of course, the tie may be used for various purposes such as an animal tie, and a hammock rope.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A rope tie comprising a rope having a flexible loop formed therefrom, and a retaining device having an eye through which one arm of the loop is passed to permit the device to swing on said arm, said retaining device also having a hooked portion for engaging the opposite arm of the loop to hold the arms against spreading.
2. A rope tie comprising a rope formed at one end into a small loop, a retainer having an eye turning on one arm of the loop and a hook for engaging with the opposite arm of the loop and adapted to restrict the width between the arms to a distance less than the diameter of the rope.
