HASP AND HANDLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed November 22, 1906. Serial No. 344,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l` WILLIAM D. FEERIs, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county ol' Whiteside, Stato ot Illinois, have invented certain new and `usel'ul Improvements in IIasps and Handles, ol' which the lollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to th e accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to a combined hasp and handle, and particularly to a pivoting loop lorined upon th e handle to receive and support the hasp in position for use.
The invention has tor an object to provide an exten sion lroin the handle to lorin a loop adapted to pass through a slot in the end of the hasp and so disposed as to retain the latter in a horizontal plane while pei-initting a swinging movement thereof.
A further object ol the invention is to provide the overlapped end of the loop with an aperture through which thc securing lnoans ol the handle passes so that the hasp is thereby retained against detachment troni the loop and a single device used for securing both the handle and hasp in position.
Other and further objects and advantages ol the in volition will be hereinafter set forth and the novel teatures thereof delined Vby the appended claims.
In the drawingz-Figure l is a perspective showing the application of tho invention; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a iront elevation; Fig. 4 is a bottoni plan, and Fig. 5 is a detail showing the blank at the lower end ot the handle iroin which the loop is formed.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several iigures ol' the drawing.
The numeral l designates the handle, which may be ol any desired material or conliguration, but is preferably formed of an integral blank having the gripping portion 2 thereof provided with upturnod edges, and the opposite ends 3 l'orincd with securing apertures, one end being provided with an aperture 4` through which any desired attaching device niay be passed, lor instance a screw 5, as shown in Fig. l. Either ot the attaching portions 3 may be provided with a hasp loop (i, lor instance the lower one, as here shown, and this loop comprises a laterally disposed extension which is preferably lorlned integral with the attaching portion and adapted to be bent upon itseli', as shown in Fig. 4 so as to pass through the aperture 7 0i the hasp 8, and the l'ree end of this extension is formed with a securing ap* erture 9 through which any desired attaching devices, such as screw l0 may be passed.
The hasp may be oi any preferred character, but preferably provided, as herein shown, with the longitudinally extending slot l1 adapted to pass over the usual securing staple l2, as shown in Fig. l. It will be observed that the transverse slot 7 ot the hasp is rectangular in configuration to closely lit the extension loop 6 and the hasp thus retained in a horizontal position and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane so as to be always in alinernent with the securing staple which does not require a lifting thereof to lit it over the staple,
but it simply inay swing upon the loop. The loop being l'orined :troni an extension ofthe attaching portion of the handle is removed l'rorn the gripping portion th erect and thus adapted to swing without interference or contact with the hand oi the user, while the application of the handle `securing device through the free end ol' the extension retains the hasp in position thereon so as to absolutely prevent any accidental disconnection thereof.
lt will be seen that the invention permits the application of hasps of different lengths or characters by raising the free end oi the loop, and when bent into the position shown in Fig. 4- the parts are so connected that they inay be readily handled in assembled position, and the combined parts only require two securing devices in their application. This loop permits the ready re moval of the hasp for compact and convenient packing when nested with the handle, while the attaching ineans at the free end ot the loop absolutely locks the hasp in position when the attaching device lor the handle is applied.
Having now'described Iny invention and set orth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A handle provided with a laterally disposed extension lient to torni a loop, said extension having at its free end a securing aperture, and a hasp removably mounted upon said loop and retained thereon when the free end of said extension is secured.
2. A handle provided at one end with an apertured attachingportion having an extension therefrom provided at its tree end with an aperture adapted to be alined with that of the attaching portion, said alned apertures being; adapted to receive an attaching device, and a hasp mounted upon said extension.
3. A handle provided at one end with an apertured attaching portion and a laterial extension therefrom provided at its free end with an aperture adapted to be alined with that of the attaching portion, and a hasp provided with a transverse rectangular slot therein for pivotally mountingl said hasp upon said extension and retaining said hasp in a substantially horizontal plane.
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses. i
WILLIAM D. FERRIS.
