BALE OR PACKAGE TIE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,877, dated February 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES B. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredericksburg, in the county of W'ayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale or Package Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple bale or package tie by which a cord for tying a bale or bundle can be readily and quickly secured after being drawn around the same, and can also be conveniently detached when the bale or bundle is to be un bound.

In carrying out my. invention I provide for the tie-holder a flat piece of any suitable material, (preferably hard wood,) which may be, say, three or fourinches in length, one'inchin width, and one-fourth of an inch in thickness. These proportions are only approximate, however, and may be varied at pleasure, accord ing to the size of the cord to be used in connection with the tie-holder and of the bale or package to be bound. The tie-cord for the bale or bundle is attached to one end of the tie-holder, and the opposite end of the latter is provided with a central slot open to the end of the holder. said slot are formed two notches on the sides of the holder.

In using my invention the cord, which is attached to the holder, is passed around the bale or bundle to be tied, and the free end thereof is then drawn into the open slot at the end of the tie-holder, then once or twice into each of the side notches, and againinto the slot and tied or pulled tight, so that the notches and slot will hold it securely, but in such a manner that it may be readily released when the bale or bundle is to be unbound. \Vhile there are various ways in which the free end Opposite the inner end of the of the cord may be secured in the slot and notches of the tie-holder, I prefer the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings,which will be found convenient.

In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of my tie-holder, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, illustrating the use of the same.

A denotes the flat tie-holder, to one end of which is secured the cord or string B. The holder, at the end opposite to which the cord is attached, is provided with a central open ended slot, a, preferably straight, except at its outer end, where it is slightly flaring, as shown. The holder is provided on its sides opposite the inner end of the slot (t with notches a, for co-operation with the said slot a, as hereinbefore indicated. When thus constructed, my invention is adapted to be used in the manner above described.

I am aware that tieholders somewhat like mine have heretofore been constructed-such, for example, as the tie-holder shown by Patent- No. 74,070, to A. O. Fletcher andldo not therefore wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, a tie-holder having an open-ended slot and side notches.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The flat tie-holder A, having the open-ended slot at, the inner sides of which are straight, excepting at the ends, where they flare slightly, and having also the side notches, to, opposite the inner end of said slot, combined with a suitable cord attached to the said holder at the end thereof opposite the said slot, substantially as set forth.
