1 This invention relates to e knot tyin device and hes reference more particulsr y to a device of this character for forming knots in cord or twine, which is used in tying up & eclitages of letters and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and cheep device for effecting the above recited result and especially a device which is capable of csrryout its intended use with the greatest of etficiency.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and the some will be describing; the device in detail.

A coiled spring 15, supported around the post 16, is adapted to maintain the lever adjacent the top 7 of the housing with' the needle 9 projecting through the opening therein. The lever may be manipulated to retract the needle within the housing, the
spring returning the same to normal position.
Attention is directed to the peculiar con-- struction of the needle. As stated, the same is split producing two substantially resilient prongs, 11 and 12. The inner face of each prong is rounded or convexly curved, so to speak, providing outwardly flaring lips 17, with theabutt-ing faces 18 between the lips and the slot 19. When the needle is pro ected from the housing, the resiliency of the prongs may be realized to easily slide the cord between the abutting faces 18 and into the slot 19. The frictional contect of the abutting faces, which while permitting the cord to be inserted in and withdrawn from the slot will grip the same sulficiently to cause a slight pull to be excrted in withdrawing the cord from the slot.

The cord to be knotted is held between the thumb and index finger of both hands and looped around the needle (see Fig. 4), one end of the cord, preferably the end A, which is under the end A is inserted between the lips 1? into the slot 19 (see Fig. 5), the lever 13 is then pressed down whereupon the end of the cord held within the slot 19 will be drawn through the loop by the re-.v
traction of the needle, which will also disengage the loop from around the needle. B exerting a pull the knot thus formed will be drawn tight as the end A of the cord is still held in the slot 19, it is released however when thepull is sufficient to slide it between the abutting faces 18.
From the foregoing it will be seen the operation is extremely simple, at the same time it is positive and little or no skill is required to manipulate the device.
