Description
PATENTED- APR. 1 7, I906 E. M. COMSTOUK.
PACKAGE TIE.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 6, 1904.
ETQEG EDGAR M. COMSTOOK, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
PACKAGE-TEE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1'7, 1906.
Application iil d September 6, 1904. Serial No. 223,387.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. CoMsToox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Package-Ties; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it per tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to package-ties.
It has for its object an improved device adapted to hold the end of a string that is used to secure a bag or package.
The drawing is a perspective View of the device and shows it applied to a package, which is shown in dotted lines with the string passed around the package and throughthe tie, as intended and hereinafter explained.
A piece of wire is bent on itself to produce a very acute angle a between a terminal branch I) and the first middle branch 0. At e the wire is again bent to form a second middle branch d, which lies nearly parallel with the middle branch 0, slightly diverging from it, however, to make an acute angle 6. The middle branch d is bent in a curve at f, and the portion between f and the extreme end 9 is curved inward nearly parallel with the general longitudinal direction of the two middle branches and is bent sharply back on itself to form an acute angle at h. Each of the angles e and h is so sharp that an ordinary string drawn into it will be caught and held by frictional engagement between the string and the sides of the wire. The end of the cord, preferably provided with a knot, is caught through the angle a and the cord is wound around a package and drawn through the loop formed by the curve f. The cord is given a turn around the fastener at this curved part f and is then drawn down into the angle 11, preferably bringing the cord from the back to the front in drawing it into the inlge a. The package will now be securely What I claim is A package-tie composed of a single length of wire bent at one end to an angle to engage and hold the first end of a cord inserted therein, a sharply-angular center portion next adjacent thereto, a curved portion at the end of one of the arms forming said sharply-angular portion, around which the cord may be wound, and an angular part adjacent to said curved portion and forming the other end of the length of wire around which the free end of a cord may be drawn, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR M. COMSTOCK.
