' ence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in seals and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character which may be applied into operative position with convenience and facility and which is'preferably produced from a metallic strip of material of relatively low elastic limit.
' The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar-- 'rangement of the several parts of my improved seal whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is ren dere'd simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. V
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a seal constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in its initial arrangement; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of my invention in interlocked arrangement; and Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating the fracture of the seal upon reverse or retrograde fiexure being imparted to the extension.-
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated strip of material and preferably a metal possessing a low elastic limit and having produced therein an opening 2 in close proximity to an end thereof, while the opposite end portion of said strip 1 is provided with, the extension 3 of a transverse diameter throughout its length less than the corresponding diameter of the strip 1 and adapted to be inserted through the opening 2 and at its inner extremity the extension 3 has its intermediate portion cut out, as at 4, so that the extension 7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedApril 16, 1915.
Serial No. 21,718.
3 may be readily bent back upon the strip 1 after it has been inserted through the opening 2 whereby the seal is effectively maintained in applied position and in view of the fact that the metal from which the device is produced has a relatively low elastic limit, it will be readily appreciated that after being bent or flexed rearwardly the extension will effectively maintain such adjustment. I also find it of advantage in practice to weaken the inner face of the extension 3 on the transverse line a preferably at the junction of said extension with the strip so that the rearward bend or flexure of the extension may be facilitated. It is also to be particularly observed that the portion of the strip 1 intermediate the opening 2 and the extension 3 is free and unobstructed. The longitudinal margins of the extension 3 are also free and unobstructed.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a seal constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and. it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be under- "stood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation .of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
It will be appreciated that my improved seal is primarily intended for use in connection with car doors or the like and it is also to be understood that the extension 3 is adapted to have impressed therein or other wise produced thereon the seal number.
I claim:
A A seal of the character described comprising an elongated metallic strip having an opening produced therein in close proximity to an end thereof and having its opposite end portion provided with a longitudinally disposed extension, said extension being insertible through the opening of the strip, the
longitudinal margins of the extension being free and unobstructed throughout their Patented Oct. 5,1915.
