SHAFT-TIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Application filed August 3, 1917. Serial No. 184,307.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. SToUrn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Branksmere, in the parish of St. Michael, Island of Barbados, British West Indies, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Tips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shaft or thill tips and has for an object to provide a tip of this character which may be quickly and conveniently applied to a shaft end and embodies novel means for holding the tip securely in position and preventing rattling thereof on the shaft end.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 shows a portion of a shaft or thill end with the invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4; is a fragmental perspective view of the tip detached from the shaft.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a portion of a thill or shaft end 5 with which my improved tip is associated and designat ed generally at 6.
Specifically the tip 6 consists of a shell 7 that is open at one end as indicated at 8 and at the opposite end is closed as at 9. The bore 10 of the shell 7 is reduced in diameter inwardly from its open end 8 for a portion of its length as indicated at 11, there resulting an abrupt shoulder 12 the purpose of which will subsequently be explained.
Formed integrally with the closed end 9 be caused to enter the end of the shaft and,
by reason of its tapered formation, will expand the same within the enlarged portion of the shell bore to frictionally engage the wall thereof, the shoulder 12 being at the same time caused to bite into the shaft and thus eflectively serving to prevent accidental dislodgement of the tip.
Should the shaft at any time tend to shrink so that the tip will rattle thereon, this may be quickly remedied by again tapping upon the closed end of the shell to drive the same farther upon the shaft and additionally expand the same until a tight fit is again procured.
What I claim is A shaft tip consisting of a shell open at one end and closed at its other end, the bore of the shell being reduced in its cross dimensions from its open end for a portion of its length whereby an abrupt shoulder is provided, and a wedge member carried by the closed end of the shell extending longitudinally within the latter whereby when the shell is driven upon a thill end said wedge member will enter and expand the latter into frictional contact with the wall of the bore while said shoulder will be caused to bite into the shaft.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD A. STOUTE.
