Description

C. S. OSBORN.
SECTIONAL WASHER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 5,. IsIs.
L288973. Patented Dec.24,1918.
juve-H01 C. @Shown CLYDE S. OSBORN, OF BESSVILLE, MISSOURI.
SECTIONAL WASHER.
Application filed April 5, 1918.
T0 all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE S. OsonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessville, in the county of Bollinger, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Sectional I/Vasher; and I do hereby declare the following to be ay full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a sectional collar or washer, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be applied to a shaft at an intermediate point in the length thereof without the necessity of first removing any pulleys or wheels which may be fixed upon the shaft in order to slip the washer over the. end of the shaft.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sectional collar which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily applied to a shaft or removed therefrom, and which is not liable to become accidentally disengaged from the shaft after being placed in position.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a sectional collar constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the two halves thereof as about to be applied to a shaft from opposite sides thereof.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the sectional collar in position upon the shaft.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one set of interlocking ends of the collar. p
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through the interlocking tongues at one side of the collar, said view being taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views o the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918. serial No. 226,896.
numeral 1 designates a. shaft, and the numerals 2 and 3 complemental semicircular sections of the collar. The extremities of the semicircular section 2 are provided with circumferentially projecting dove-tail tongues 4 which extend the full width of the collar and have the inner sides thereof flush collar and have the outer sides thereof Hush with the outer periphery of the collar, While the inner sides thereof are beveled at 5a. In assembling the two sections 2 and 3 of the collar, they are applied to the shaft l from opposite sides thereof and brought together in different planes, being subsequently moved longitudinally upon the shaft l into the same plane. This latter movement causes the beveled faces 4a of the tongues et to interlock with the beveled faces 5=1 of the tongues 5 in such a manner as to hold the two sections 2 and 3 together and prevent them from pulling apart. It will also be noted that the beveled face 5a of the tongue 5 is formed with a longitudinal rib 6 of which the sides incline outwardly toward the sides of the collar, while the beveled face la of the tongue 4 is formed with a corresponding depression 7. When the two sections are assembled the ends of the section 3 spring outwardl slightly to admit of the rib 6 entering an being seated in the depressions 7, and the two sections of the washer are thus held against accidental lateral movement relative to each other, although they can be readily forced apart when it is desired to separate the sections and detach the collar from the shaft.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sectional collar including complementa-1 segmental sections adapted to be applied to a shaft from opposite sides thereof, one of the sections bein provided at its ends with circumferentially projecting dove-tail tongues of which the outer faces are undercut, while the other segmental section is provided at its ends with circumferentially projecting dove-tail tongues of which the inner faces are undercut and adapted to interlock with the undercut faces of the first mentoned tongues to prevent the two Sections In testimony whereof I have signed my from pulling apart, one set of undercut faces name to this Specification in the presence of being provided With longitudinal ribs, While two subscribing Witnesses.
the other set of undercut faces are. provided CLYDE S. OSBORN.
5 With corresponding depressions adapted to y Witnesses:
interlock With the ribs to prevent lateral dis- COLMAN TURY, engagement 'of the sections. G. A. VENABLE.
