J. OHIVIL L. SHAFT COUPLING.
No. 408,953. J Patented Aug. 13, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CHIVILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE IVEBSTER & COM- STOCK MANUFACTURING CQMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SHAFT-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 408,953, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed April 2, 1889. Serial No. 305,733. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN CHIVILL, of Chicago,in the county of Cook. and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Shaft-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of a hanger, portions of two conveyer-shafts connected by means of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; and Fig. 3 is atransverse sectional view taken upon the line a: 00, Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow there shown.
Like letters of reference in the different figures indicate like parts.
My invention relates to shaft-couplings, and particularly to those employed in elevator-conveyers; and my object is to so construct said couplings that the respective sections of shaftings may be removed without in any way interfering with or disturbing the position of the others or of the intervening hanger. Moreover, I desire to provide a large bearing-surface between the connecting-bolt and that portion of the shaft wit-h which it is brought into contact, so as to prevent what is commonly known as the shearing of the bolt by the shaft.
To these ends myinvention consists in the combination of elements, hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A B represent two conveyer-shafts, which consist of gaspipe or other tubing, and have collars or sleeves to Z) cast or otherwise formed upon the ends thereof. Lugs Z), Figs. 1 and 3, are cast 40 upon said sleeves for the purpose of attaching the usual spiral flights thereto to serve as conveyers.
A hanger C is attached to the conveyortrough in the usual way, and serves asabearing for the coupling-shaft D, Figs. 2 and 3, which is made of a sufficient length to extend into the shafts A B, preferably about the length of the collars 0; b. Slots (Z (Z and bores (Z' d are formed in the coupling-shaft, 'while slots b b and bores b b are made in the sleeves a b to conform to the slots and bores, respectively, in said coupling-shaft.
Bolts E E, each of which is provided with a fiat oblong tapering head 6, adjusted to fit within both of the slots b d, as clearly shown in the drawings, so as to provide alarge bearing-surface, serves to attach the couplingshaft to the shafts A and B. Said bolts are secured by means of nuts e e tapped thereon. In order to remove a section of the conveyer-shaft, the bolts E E are removed, when the coupling-shaft D is pushed into the remaining hollow conveyer-shaft a sufficient distance to permit the withdrawal of the shaft desired to be removed, thus greatly simplifying this operation as compared with the old methods.
The large flat bearing-surface of the head E prevents the shearing of the bolt which occurs in the usual construction, and enables it to last much longer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a shaft-coupling, the combin ation, with hollow shafts having longitudinal slots and bores, respectively, in their meeting ends, of an intervening hanger arranged between said ends, a couplin -shaft having longitudinal slots and bores to conform to the respective positions of the slots and bores in said hollow shafts, and bolts having flat heads adapted to fit within said slots and bores, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a hanger, bored and slotted shafts A B, bored and slotted coupling-shaft D, and bolts E E, having elongated flattened heads, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a shaft-coupling, the combination of a hanger, hollow shafts provided with slots 11 and bores (2 a coupling-shaft having slots (1 cl and bores d d, and bolts E E, having fiattened heads adapted to fit within said slots, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 25th day of February, 1889.
J OIIN CHIVILL.
