SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,067, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed March 20, 1896.

Be it known that I, ZIMRI DUNCAN GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in seals in which the seal is made of one piece of metal of any suitable kind, which may be made by a single blow of a die, one end being widened so that it may be bent upon itself to form a pocket for the reception of the other end of the strip, which is cut and bent so as to form an arrow-head, which, after being inserted in the pocket, made by bending the folds of the opposite end upon itself, the wings of the arrow-head-shaped end will engage over the edges of the pocket and effectually hold the ends in a locked relation.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means for preventing the arrow-head-shaped end of the strip from being thrust through and out the opposite end of the pocket, which consists in the provision of a flap which is turned in at one end of the pocket, thus forming a stop against which the point of the strip contacts if the latter is forced through the length of the pocket.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination,
and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the seal. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the seal with the ends thereof locked together; Fig. 3, a central 1on- Serial No. 584.078. (No model.)

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the one piece of metal out of which the seal is made. One end of the blank is widened, as seen at B, and two flaps O and D are cut so as to be separated from the longitudinal piece A a short distance. The opposite end of the blank is cut in V shape at E, and the portion F cut from said aperture is bent out, forming the flange shown in the drawings. The end of the strip G is bent upon itself, forming a hook inclined at substantially the same angle as the flange F.
The widened portion B is bent and folded upon itself to form a pocket, (shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4,) the flap D being first bent upon itself and folded in, as well as the end of the strip A, over the ends of which foldedin portions D and A the flanges of the opposite end of the tie are designed to engage when the end is forced into the pocket, thus ren dering it impossible to withdraw the flanged end of the strip. The flap 0 is also bent upon itself and folded inside the pocket to prevent any possibility of the end of the strip being forced through the pocket, thus rendering it impossible to detach the ends of the strip without cutting the portion outside the pocket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A seal, comprising the one-piece blank having one end bent upon itself to form a pocket, flaps D and O forming stops at each end of the said pocket, the V-shaped flange F outwardly bent and forming, with the bent end G, an arrow-shaped head, each fang of which is adapted to engage over an inwardly-folded flap, substantially as shown and described.
