Description

L. B. EDGAR.
SEALING DEVICE.
APPLICATION IILEDVIBBA, 1909.

SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 4, 1909.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910. Serial No. 476,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIEN B. EDGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sealing devices and has for its object to provide a sealing device, the parts of which are adapted to be applied and secured together in locked position without the use of specially constructed tools.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the sealing device with the sealing block shown in section; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the fastening bar; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the tag.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, 1 indicates the fastening bar. This bar, which is preferably in the form of a flat strip of metal, is provided at one end with the head 2 and at its opposite end with barbs 3, formed by slitting and bending opposite side edges of the bar in opposite directions. Adapted to be engaged with the barbed end of the fastenin bar, is a sealing block 4:, which may be formed of glass, plastic material, or any other form of frangible material. The sealing block is provided with a central longitudinal compartment 5, which communicates with one end of the block through a reduced passage 6, through which the barbed end of the fastening bar 1, is inserted. The barbs 3, after passing through said passage 6, are adapted to spring apart and en age shoulders 7, formed at the junction 0 the passage 6 and compartment 5.
WVhen the barbed end of the fastening bar is thus inserted in the sealing block, the seal cannot be detached without cutting the fastening bar or breaking the sealing block.
This invention also comprises a metal tag 8, one end of which is inserted through a reduced passage 9 in the other end of the sealing block and has said end bent to form a spring barb 10, adapted to engage a shoulder 11, formed at the junction of the passage (5 and compartment 5. On the outer end of the tag may be impressed the stamp or name of a station, or a trade-mark, or any other symbol or inscription, or in said outer end of the tag may be arranged a plug of lead or soft material 12, in which a symbol or inscription may be impressed.
I claim A sealing device comprising a rectangular frangible sealing member formed with a central longitudinal compartment and having a reduced longitudinal passage in one end communicating with said compartment, locking shoulders on the member at the junction of the inner end of the passage and compartment, a flat fastening bar of oblong form in cross-section having one end extending into the passage into the compartment, spring barbs formed by slitting and bending opposite side edges of the fastening bar in opposite directions, said barbs adapted to lock upon said shoulders, a metal tag having one end extending through the opposite end of the sealing member into the compartment thereof, and means for securing said end of the tag in said compartment.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
