INVENTORI Nicene UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIcE. I
JOHN E. GOGLE, OF MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO-THIRDS TO REGINALD T. FRENCH, OF SAME PLACE, AND JOHN MCQUEEN, OF
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
CAR-SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,127, dated October 27, 1896. Application filed February 7,1896. Serial No, 573,430. (No model.)
- T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J GEN E. GOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleville, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals for Oar-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in seals for car-doors. Its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features,
hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my'invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a reverse plan of the same; Fig.4, a side elevation of the same as it appears when sealed, with the case in longitudinal section; Fig. 5, a plan view of a modified form of my device; Fig. 6, areverse plan of the same, and Fig. '7 a side elevation of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a strip of sheet metal, preferablyof tin and of any suitable dimensions, having its respective ends folded and curved, forming spring-barbs 15.
O is a tubular case having a diameter 55 somewhat more than the width of the strip A, and provided near one end with transverse openings F in its opposite sides, through which the strip A is inserted. Said tube at the end farthest from the openings F is also 40 closed by a concavo-convex head D, having its concave side outward, and E is a transverse slit across the axis of said head, of suitable dimensions to receive the folded ends 13 of the strip A.
When said seal is applied for use, one or both ends of the strip A are passed through the parts to be sealed, or secured thereby, and then both ends of the said strip are thrust through the slit E, as shown in Fig. 4,
when the barbs B spring outward and, engaging the convex inner surface of thehead D, prevent withdrawal of said ends. The convexity of the head D causes the barbs to slip outward and thus aids in preventing them from passing out through the slot E, and the concave side aids in guiding the ends of the strip A to the slot E when inserting the said strip. To detect the fact should the strip A be out and reinserted in the case 0, I stamp or otherwise impress the strip A close to the outer ends and close outside the case 0, when.
said ends are inserted therein, with any figure or mark, as at G,'which by shortening of the strip A, if the same is cut and reinserted, would be brought within the case O, and its absence on the outside would indicate that the seal had been opened.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show a strip having a tag A at one end. Said tag being an enlargement of said strip prevents withdrawal of the end thereof from the case, and the other end only of said strip is barbed for insertion in the case O. Said Figs. 6 and 7 also show a tubular case squared, as at G, where the openings F are formed, whereby the end of said case is closed by the strip A without cutting away so much of the material as in the cylindrical form.
The essential novelty in my device is in utilizing the strip A to close one end of the case, whereby the structure may be cheaply and easily made.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a seal for car-doors a tubular case having a head at one end provided with a slit,
- and transverse openings in the opposite sides,
and a strip inserted in said openings to close the other end of said case and having abarbed end to pass through the slit in the end of the case and engage the inner surface of the head, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. GOGLE.
