HAIR ROLL 0R PUFF.
To all whom t may concern Be it yknown that I, RUSSELL H. DAMoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Rolls or Puits, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to hair rolls or puffs and has to do more particularly with the manner of securing the comb or combs to the roll.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a roll with the combs attached thereto; Fig. 2, a detail sectional view taken on the line a-a of Fig. l, and somewhat enlarged; Fig. 3,
a perspective view of a modified form of roll; Fig. 4, a similar view illustrative of the manner in which the roll may be condensed or shortened if too long, and held in such condition by the comb and attaching means; and Fig. 5, a like view showing how the roll may be elongated.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a simple and eiicient attaching means for the comb, one 1n which the comb will be held more or less rigidly 1n place with reference to the body oi the roll or puff.
A further object of the invention is to attach two rolls to a single comb-retaining bar and to secure the comb (or combs) to the rolls and the bar.
A still further object of the invention is to so utilize the fastening means for the comb that, in case the roll is too long or too short, it may be shortened or elongated and held in such adjusted position by the comb attaching means.
The body of the roll or puff will preferably be formed of a tubular wire fabric, the wires being spring wire, so that the roll will be elastic and self sustaining. While this is the preferred material, its use under all conditions is not essential, as the particular manner of attaching the comb is applicable to rolls and puffs otherwise produced.
The body of the roll in Fig. l is designated by 1, and has attached to it near its ends Specification of Letters Patent.

two combs 2. The body of each comb will be formed upon a curve similar to the curve of the roll, and a retaining bar or strip 3 is passed within the roll and lies upon or against the roll directly in line with the upper or head portion of t-he comb. Staples 4 are passed through the comb, the meshes of the roll and through the retaining strip, being clenched upon the strip, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This construction insures a permanent and Satisfactory fastening for the comb, and inasmuch as the ends of the staples lie within the roll there is no danger of the same catching in the hair.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated two puiis or rolls 5 and 6 attached to a single comb 7, the retaining strip designated by 8 passing through the adjacent ends of the rolls. In this instance the rivets 9 are employed to secure the comb to the retaining strip.
Fig. 4t illustrates a single pull or pompa.- dour roll, the central portion whereof has been condensed, as at 10, which condensatio-n or endwise compression will be maintained by the innermost rivets (or other securing means) 11, the compressed portion being prevented from buckling by the comb and retaining strip. This is useful in case the roll should be too long for the purpose for which it is to be used.
In Fig. the roll is shown as elongated or drawn out slightly at the sections designated by l2 and 155, the remaining portions of the roll being normal. By reason of the rivets passing through the mesh at each end of said elongated portions, such elongation will be retained wit-hout in any manner affecting the remainder of the roll.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A hair roll comprising a hollow body formed of intermeshing spring wires; a comb lying against the outer face thereof; a retaining bar located within the body in line with the head of the comb; and fastening means for securing the parts together.V
2. A hair roll comprising a hollow body formed of intermeshing spring wires and capable of being elongated or compressed in part or in whole; a comb lying against the outer face of the body; a retaining bar located in line with the head of the comb;
and a plurality of? separate fastening de- Vices passing through the combb, the lneh of the body and the retaining al', Where y portions of tho roll Whloh oro looglloolloolly RUSSELL H- DAMON. I5 elongated or compressed will be held in such fitnessest position by the adjacent fastening devices, PEARLE E. WALKER, In testimony whereof I have signed my ALFRED E. DAVIS.
