UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BESSIE E. STEPHENS, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS, ASSICNOR OF ONE-HALF Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1905.
Application filed March 9. 1905. Serial N0- 249,306-
.lo (all, whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BESSIE E. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Rats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hair-rats; and one of the objects of the same is to provide an aseptic hair-rat of a flocculentlight material which will hold its shape and which will be self-ventilating in character.
Another object is to provide a hair rat which can be readily washed and in which all the fibers of the rat are disposed longitudinally thereof, said fibers being connected at their ends by a thread or twine which Will hold the ends of the long fibers and make a strong, durable, shapely, and efficient device for supporting pompadours.
These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of a hair-rat made in accordance with my invention.
This invention is designed as an improvement upon the hair-rat described and claimed in Patent No. 781,567, dated January 31, 1905, issued to me and Chas. N. Stephens. In the patent referred to the fibers with which the rat was composed were described therein as being intertwined together to form the desired shape. I have found it very desirable to comb out the fibers to lie side by side longitudinally of the rat and tie the ends thereof, so that the central portion of the rat will naturally assume an enlarged or bulged shape.
The material of which the rat is composed is crimped or crepe wool, the long fibers of which when combed out provide a very resilient, strong, and desirable structure for this purpose when the ends have been tied, as shown.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the rat proper, and 2 represents the threads or twines with which the same is tied at its ends. The fibers being crimped naturally pull the structure toward the center and form the enlarged bobbin-shaped contour shown. By grasping the ends of the rat and pulling outward the fibers will be straightened out and cannot become loose, as in a device of this character in which the fibers are merely interlocked and not tied at the ends.
From the foregoing it will be observed that my invention provides a light, ventilating, durable, aseptic, and washable hair rat in which supporting-wires are not used and in which the contour will be preserved under all conditions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hair-rat composed of crimped. wool with the fibers of the same disposed longitudinally of the rat and the ends of the same united or tied by threads or twine, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BESSIE E. STEPHENS.
