i California, have invented new and usefuly Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to combs, and particularly to a type of comb which may be advantageously used by women wearing comparatively short hair or so-called bobbed cuts.

The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of combs of the character described: to provide means for securing` the comb in place so as to avoid displacement and loss: and further. to provide a comb which will not only keep the hair in place when worn, but which may also serve as an ornament.

One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the comb.

Referring to the drawings in detail. A indicates the head of the comb. 9. a pair of main end teeth. and 3 a plurality of intermediate teeth. The intermediate teeth are oblieuely out away or slotted on one side as indicated at l and a plurality of hooks or barbs 5 are thus formed on one side of each tooth. The intermediate teeth together with the end teeth. are otherwise pointed as indicated at 6 and hook shaped or barb pointed ends are in this manner formed.

The comb as a whole may be slightly bent or curved both vertically and horizontally. as shown at 7 and 8, respectively. in 2 and 3. and the head of the comb mav he finished plain or ornamented as desired.

Combs as ordinarily constructed and worn by women are very liable to become displaced while in use, since frictional engagement of the teeth with relation to the hair is the only means employed for preventing displacement or loss of the combs.

Combs are very often employed for ornamental purposes and are frequently more or less costly, and it is therefore desirable to provide means, in addition to the mere frictional engagement of the teeth, for preeluding` accidental displacement or loss of the combs. This is particularly true where combs are worn in short hair or so-called bobbed cuts.

The hooking of the teeth as here shown serves the purpose admirably, as the frictional engagement between the teeth and the hair is materially increased by the added surfaces produced by slottinef the points of the teeth, and it should furthermore be ob` vious that the comb is retained against out ward movement by `the hooks or barbs formed thereon. In fact, practical experience has proved that it is practically' impossible to remove the comb without pulling it endwise through the hair; this being a fairly simple matter where short hair is worn.

Vilhile the hooks or barbs, as illustrated i in Fig. 1, are formed on one side of the teeth only, it is obvious that the hooks may be reversed with relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 4. f

The comb may be constructed of any suitable material, and the finish and proportions thereof may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate or various uses may demand.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ist l. A. comb comprising; a head member, a pair of end teeth projecting therefrom. a plurality of intermediate teeth, and hooks formed in the intermediatey teeth at their outer ends and in the sides thereof.
