BARRETTE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 14, 1809.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Serial No. 501,932.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL C. GLINns, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrettes; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to an improved form of barrette and has for its object to produce a barrette which is cheaper and less liable to get out of order than the forms now in use.
To this end my invention consists in eliminating the pin-tongue and catch commonly used in the manufacture of barrettes to hold them in engagement with the hair, and in providing barrettes with suitable teeth for this purpose.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved barrette in its first stage of construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same in its completed form. Fig. 3 is a top edge view of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the barrette may be formed of any suitable material such as metal, celluloid, shell, ivory, etc., and comprises the elongated body portion A which may be of any desired design, and the end portions B which may be secured to or formed integral with said body portion A, and are each provided with a series of teeth C.
As shown in Fig. 1, the body portion A and end portions B are first formed in a straight fiat piece, with the teeth C sla'nting inward toward the center of the body portion. The body portion A is then curved slightly to conform to the curvature of the hair of the wearer, and the end portions B are folded over upon the back of the body portion A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. With the end portions B bent back in this position the slant of the teeth 0 will be reversed so that they will then slant away from the center of the body portion A. The free ends of the teeth C are preferably bent outward away from the back of the body portion, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to readily engage the hair, and when the barrette is in position upon the head of the wearer, the hair will be gripped between the back of the body portion A and the end portions B, and the device thereby securely held in position.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of the character described comprising a body portion provided with toothed end portions formed integral with said body portion, said toothed end portions being folded back upon the back of said body portion.
2. An article of the character described comprising a body portion provided with toothed end portions folded back upon the back of said body portion, the teeth of said end portions being slanted away from the center of said body portion.
3. An article of the character described comprising a body portion provided with toothed end portions folded back upon the back of said body portion,.the free ends of the teeth of said end portions being bent transversely away from the back of said body portion.
4. An article of the character described comprising an elongated curved body portion provided with toothed end portions formed integral with said body portion and folded back upon the back of said body portion, the teeth of said end portions being arranged to slant longitudinally away from the center of said body portion, and the free ends of said teeth being bent transversely away from the back of said body portion.
