arrasa/a.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED BURKE, a citizen ot the United States ot America, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to persona-l wear and particularly to hair pins and combs.
An object of this invention is to produce a novel pin having an attachment designed to act as a clasp for holding hair in certain relation to the pin, means being provided in order that the clasp member may be moved to its operative position with relation to the pin without disturbing or disarranging the hair to which it is applied.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pin having a pivotal clasp provided with curved teeth designed to coact with the pin, means being provided in connection with the clasp I'or limiting the movement in one direction with relation to the said pin.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in thearrangement and combination ot parts to be hereinatter more fully described and claimed.
In describing` the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which-- Figure l is a view in elevation ot the Jfront of the pin with a clasp attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the clasp open; Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevation of the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 illustrates a side elevation of the device with the parts in the position shown in Fig. l.
In these drawings 5 denotes atwo prong pin, the prongs of which may be of any appropriate contour, the said pin having a head 6 with recesses 7 therein7 the said head 6 having holes 8 in the edges thereof which intersectthe recesses 7, the said holes being designed for the purpose oit receiving the pivotal pins 9. Acting in conjunction with the pin just described is a clasp which is pivotally or hingedly connected to the said pin, the said clasp being composed of a Specification of Letters Patent.

series of curved teeth l0 which are connected to a cross bar or member l2, which cross bar or member may be termed the head ot' the clasp. rlhe configuration of the teeth is well disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4l, and their relation to the pin is also well disclosed.
From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2, it
vwill be observed that the two adjoining teeth ll at each end ot the cross bar l2 have their ends integral, and that they are reduced in length as compared with the teeth l0. The ends of the teeth ll are preferably equal in width to the width of the prongs of the pin, as shown in Fig. l, the said relation being maintained for the purpose of affording engaging surfaces for pressing the hair between the said teeth l1 and the prongs.
The cross bar 1Q, is provided with two cars or lugs 18 which lie in the recesses of the head of the pin and have apertures to receive the pivotal pins 9, heretofore described.
By reason of the relation of parts just described, it will be observed that the clasp may be articulated with relation to the pin, and in use, it is the purpose of the inventor that the pin 5 shall be applied to the puffs of hair of the user, and that the clasp shall be moved on its pivot in order that the teeth of the clasp may be closed over and through the putls of the hair, after thrusting the prongs of the pin into said puffs. Ot' course, the inventor does not wish to be limited with. regard to the use of his invention, for enough has been said, it is thought, to indicate that the device is susceptible of a variety of applications in uses as an article of personal wear.
l claim- 1. An article of personal wear comprising a pin having a head with recesses therein, a clasp comprising a cross bar having lugs in the recesses, pivotal pins for connecting the lugs to the pin, and curved teeth carried by the cross bar, two of said teeth at each vend of the cross bar having integral ends.
Q. An article of personal wear comprising a pin havingl a head with recesses therein, a clasp comprising a cross bar having lugs in the recesses, pivotal pins for conneet-ing the lugs to the pin, and Curved In testimony whereof, I afiX my signateeth carried by the cross har, two of Snid ture in the presence of two witnesses. teeth at each end of the cross har having 1n- ALFRED BURKE.
tegial ends, and being reduced in length as compared with the intermediate teeth, the TWitnesses:
said integral teeth being in such relation to ANNIE M. NEYLAN, the prongs of the pin as to ooaot therewith. BLANCHE C. MAGESTER.
