PUFF-FORMING BARRET'IE.
and particularly to barrettes.
An object of this invention is to produce a puff or roll forming barrette which will press the hair into shape to simulate an ordinary puli', the said barrctte being capable of construction to form one or a plurality of pufi's according to the number of sections comprising the body of t..e barrette.
A further object of this invention is to provide a body and a tongue coacting therewith for pressing hair through openings which are formed in the body, the said openings being, under ordinary conditions, tilled with hair that is chunped between the tongue and the body.
A further object of this invention is to produce a barrette which, in its construction, may com )rise metal, shell, horn, or celluloid, viscoloid, or other composition, in which the body is ornamented in any appropriate way, the said body preferably being rovided with a coact-lng member which is carried by the body, although it has been found in )ractice that the body may be secured in place by long pins or so called hair pins.
' \Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more 0 fully set forth and claimed.
-In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, illustrates a barrotte embodying the invention by a view in elevation; Fig. .2, illustrates a longitudinal sectional view taken to one side of the pivotal support for the barrette retaining device; Fig. 3, illus- Specification of Letters Patent.

openings (3, 6, 6, although of course, the body may be formed having one or a plurality of frames with openings and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited with respect to the number or the configuration of the so called frames forming the sections of the body. At each end of the body, I provide perforations '4', which are primarily for the purpose of ornamenting the said body, although those openings may be utilized for the insertion of securing devices such as hat pins, hair pins, or the like in the event of fracture of the body retaining device or where the body retaining device is omitted in the manufacture.
The rear surface of the body is provided with two cars 8, having the piVOttll pin 9, therein on which the tongue 10, is swingingly mounted. The tongue 10, is bent to form a series of shoulders 11, which correspond in number to the openings 6, in the body, and the said shoulders project into the openings as fully shown in Fig. 2. The end of the body opposite the ears 5, is provided with a hook or tongue engaging memher 12, the construction of which may be variously modified to suit particular requirements, but as shown in Fig. 2, the retaining device 12 is in the shape of curved lugs extending rom the rear surface of the body. The member 12, serves, in the instance shown in Fig. 2, to engage the end of the tongue and this construction is the ordinary one for hair ornaments.
As shown in Fig. 3, the hair illustrated by the numeral 13, is being pressed through one of the openings of the body by the tongue 10, and the hair that is exposed through the opening is in the general contour of a puff. It will be seen from an inspection of this illustration that the effect of a puff may be attained with a comparatively small amount of hair so that with the employment of this barrette, an effective arrangement of the hair may result and in case the hair is flutiy the result will be more effective.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the body 14, is practically of the same construction as that heretofore described and the said body is provided with ears 15, to form a pivotal support for the tongue 16, which tongue is double and has shoulders similar to those heretofore described. which are designed to enter openings in the body. In fact, the construction shown in Fig. 4, is the same as that heretofore described with the series of shoulders projecting into the said I openings for pressing hair through the openings to form puffs, and means for holding I the tongue in its adjusted position.
