Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented April 28, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WARREN H. Goon- ALE, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, and ELY A. STACY, of New York, in the county and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Comb Hat- Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to toilet articles and particularly to a combined hat pin and comb which is designed for the pur ose of holding the hat on the head, and for t e further purpose of holding the hat in place.

An object of this device is to provide ornamental combs which are designed to be used in pairs; the primary object of the invention, being to retain the hat in place by devices which also engage the hair; the secondary object being to rovide a comb which will prevent the hair rom falling, it being understood that there is also a very desirable ornamental feature coupled with these advantages, so that a pair of combs .having the pins attached may be utilized as ornaments, as retaining means for the hair, and as retaining means for the hat.

While the drawings show the comb pro- :vided with ornamentations and knobs, it is to be understood that the artistic effect may be variously modified in a comb of this character through the use of knobs or ornamentations of different shapes, material, coloring or the like and that the top of the comb may be likewise ornamented in different designs, colorings, etc., to suit the fancy of the user, and in order that it may harmonize with the costume worn.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a comb having unusually long teeth to insure an engagement of the comb with the hair of the user, thus obviating any great amount of strain or pull at any partlcular.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this spec cation wherelar in all respects to the comb A, exce t in like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1, is a view in elevation showing the pin in front of the comb. Fig. 4, is a view in perspective of the improvement shown in In these drawings A, denotes a comb having a series of teeth of unusual length which are designed for the purpose of being embedded in the hair of the user and a, is the head of the comb provided with suitable ornamental plate B.. We do not wish to be restricted in any way to the form, material or effect of these ornamentations, as it is obvious that they may be variously modified as heretofore stated, to suit particular requirements.

At the head of the comb there is provided a joint 0, preferably ornamented and in the shape of a ball which is secured to the plate in any way, and the said joint has a pin D,

attached to it at a point Where the said pin is provided with an oflset d. By reason of the offset referred to, the pin and teeth of the comb lie approximately parallel and the distance between the teeth and the pin may be regulated within a predetermined distance by bending the pin with relation to the teeth. The outer end of the pin is provided with an ornamental head E, which may be colored to harmonize with the ornamentation B, on the comb, but as the particular ornamentation or artistic effect obtained may, as stated, be changed we do not wish to be limited in this re ard.

t is referable to have the pin, joint 0, and plate l integral or suitably brazed or soldered together, the said ornamental plate being secured to the head of the comb by rivets XX, and thus all of the parts are carried by the comb. It is believed to be unnecessary to specify the exact configurations of the elements comprising the invention as the illustration in the drawing will suflice as showing an operative device.

The comb shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is si1mit at the teeth F, are increased in number, ut the pin G, and other features by which the pin is connected to the comb are the same as that trally of said head, said pin extending a greater portion of its length away from the 15 comb and. projecting a suitable distance above said head.
