Description

W. A. KEYS -Feb. 11, 1930.
NECKTIE Filed Jan. 2 1929 BY: i E; ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM A. KEYS, or New Yoiuijf, 'Y r I NECKTIE This invention relates to improvements in neckties and more particularly to improvements in adjustable bow neckties.
Heretofore in the art bow neckties have been made of such construction as to be ad justable in length. Various types of arrangement have been utilized for obtaining the adjustable feature but all such arrangements have possessed inherent disadvantages, such as extreme thickness at various points in the length, which thicknesses are not balanced at corresponding points in the remainder of the length; rapidly deteriorating elastic bands, etc.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new, simple, eflicient and inexpensive adjustable bow necktie.
According to the present invention a necktie embodying the same is so constructed of similar parts that the thickness of each part will be substantially similar to the thickness of the other part for any degree of adjustment and the member which makes possible such adjustment will remain in the same position relative to the collar at all times.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description considered along with the accompanying drawings forming a part of the same wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie embodying the in vention; Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective of the adjusting portion of the necktie showing the extremities of each portion of the necktie in detail; Figure 3 is a View in partial section of the arrangement whereby the necktie is made adjustable the same being illustrated without an interlining and Figure 4 is an enlarged section taken on the lines 44 of Fig. 3 with the addition of an inter-' lining omitted from Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 indicates a bow tie made up of two similarly shaped and similarly constructed sections 11 and 12. Each of these sections is composed of a tying end and a prolongation of this end for adjusting purposes. As shown in section in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the material making up the portions 11 and 12 is of two ply 5 thickness, and such plies in the part 12 belapped by the end of' the ply'13. The portion 20 extending beyond the end of the ply ing the under ply 13 and the upper ply 14, V
which upper ply 14 is longer than theply 13, being extended from the extremity of the ply13 a considerable distance. A'strip'19'secured to this extension forms an end 20 over- 13 may or may not be slightly tapered for a purpose to be explained in detail hereinafter. The edges of the plies 14 and 19 are folded under as indicated at 15 and secured in place by means of lines of stitchin'g'lG,
' which lines of stitching 16 also serve tohold in place the folded under edges" of the ply 13 and a strip of flexible lining 17, which may extend the entire length of member 12, a part of the length thereof or be omitted entirely. as desired. Theserows of'stitching 16 continue to the end of part 20 the member 13 not being'present asshown in Fig. 4. The
14 and 19 arrangement. As before pointed out, if desired the end portion 20 may be tapered so that thesame can be inserted more readily into thepocket. The portion 11 of the necktie is made up of similar parts as indicated in the "drawings by; 8 numbers similar to those for the part 12 but with the addition. of a prime after each numeral.
In order that the portions 11 and 12 of the necktie be made adjustable independently of each other use ismade of a member 18 of metal or other suitable material having two cross bars 18 extended from one edge of the member to the other thereof, leaving three open spaces in the member proper for the reception of the ends 20 and 20 of the double ply arrangement 14 and. 19 and 14 and 19.
The operation of the necktie in adjusting the same is substantially as follows: The portion 20 may be passed through the centerf opening of the member 18 around the dividing strip 18' and back through the opening between this strip 18 and the outer edge of the member 18. This folding brings the memer 20 back flush against the remainder of the double ply 14 and 19 and as a result thereof the end 20 may be inserted in the pocket formed by the end of member 13. Similar procedure may be carried out for the end 20 of member 11. The ends 20 and 20 by this arrangement may be adjusted to any desired length and if desired one may be lengthened more than the other so that the metallic member 18 can be positioned at any desired point around the collar to prevent unsightly bulges, etc.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the illustrated embodiment but is only to be limited by the scope of the following claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is: i
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of similarly shaped members, each composed of tying end and extension thereof, means for adjusting the length of each extension and for connecting the extensions together and a pocket on each member for receiving the respective ends of the extensions.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of similarly shaped members, each composed of two-ply material forming a tying end, one of the plies being of greater length than :the second to form beyond the end of the second an extension, said second ply forming in conjunction with the first a pocket, and means for adjustably connecting the extensions of each member.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of similarly shaped members,
I each composed of tying end and extensions,
a member for connecting said extension comprising a frame having a pair of bars, each of the extensions being adapted to pass through the frame and around a bar to vary the length of said member, a pocket in each member for the reception of the ends of the respective extensions.
4. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members, one of which is composed of two-ply material forming a tying end, one of the plies being of greater length than the second to form beyond the end of the second an extension, said second ply forming in conjunction with the first a pocket and means for connecting said members together and for adjusting the length of said extension.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
