To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH A. SCRIVEN, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwear, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to underwear, and has for its object to produce a pair of drawers which will snugly fit the abdomen of the wearer. It is well known that the waists of corpulent persons are of less circumference than the circumference of the abdomen and hips of such persons, and hence a pair of drawers which will fit well at the waist will be entirely too tight over the abdomen, or if the garment properly fits the abdomen it will be entirely too large at the waist. The abdomen also varies in size at different times of the day or at different periods of the persons health, and consequently it is very difficult to produce a garment which will properly fit-adipose persons. These difficulties heretofore existent in garments for these purposes I have obviated by my invention.

My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents a man wearing an undergarment embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the upper part of the garment to more clearly show the invention. In the drawings, A is a pair of drawers, which may consist of inelastic front and rear sections a and b, constituting the body and leg portions of the drawers, and a Waist-piece c. The garment is shown as provided-with a fly-front d. The abdomen-receiving portion of the garment consists of two elastic insertions 6 f of a general triangular shape. These insertions are secured to the front section of the garment, the waist-piece, and the fly-front by stitching, the front section of the garment being cut away so that the said insertions will constitute-a portion of the front of the garment. These insertions are of considerable extent and stretch and resume their original shape under the influence of the expansion and contraction of the abdomen. The elastic insertions may be of any suitable shape or material. In the present instance I have shown them as consisting of ribbed knitted fabric having the ribs 9 thereof running diagonally. By thus constructing the garment I am enabled to get the most stretch out of the ribbed fabric.

In making up my garment I customarily make the front and rear sections and waistpiece of inelastic material, by which I mean material less elastic than the insertions e f. So, therefore, when in the claims I refer to these parts as inelastic I use the term merely in the comparative degree, meaning merely that these parts are less elastic than the insertions.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pair of drawers comprising in their structure an inelastic waist-piece, a divided front, inelastic leg portions, and a plurality of elastic insert-ions let into the front of the upper part of the said drawers on either side of the division in the front below the waist-piece of the drawers and adapted to cover the abdomen of a wearer so as to snugly fit the said abdomen at different periods of its distention.

2. A pair of drawers comprising in their structure an inelastic waist-piece, an inelastic divided front portion, and a plurality of insertions of elastic ribbed fabric let into the upper portion of the inelastic front of the drawers, below the waist-piece one on each side of the division and having their ribs running diagonally with respect to the waist-piece, the said elastic insertions being adapted to cover the abdomen of a wearer so as to snugly fit the same during different periods of its distention.

3. In a pair of drawers, the combination of inelastic front and rear sections, an inelastic waist-piece and a divided front and a plurality of insertions of elastic fabric of a triangular shape let into the upper portions of the front sections of the drawers below the waist-piece and on either side of the division in the front.
