WOMANS DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,744, dated June 3, 1902. Application filed March 10, 1902. Serial No. 97,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. LOVE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmington, De1aware,have invented certain Improvements in Womens Knitted Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knitted drawers for women, the object of the invention being to so construct the drawers as to dispense with a number of objectionable seams necessitated by the present method of manufacture, thereby rendering the garment more comfortable, and hence more generally acceptable than usual.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear View of a pair of drawers constructed in accordance with my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of a pair of tubular knitted webs prepared for the manufacture of the drawers.
Ordinarily in the manufacture of knitted drawers for women 'it is customary to cut and shape the knitted webs to form the body and' legs of the drawers, the adjoining cut edges being secured together and 1 objectionable seams being thereby formed in the leg portions of the drawers. In order. to overcome this objection, I produce a pair of knitted drawers from two tubular webs, each of which constitutes one of the seamless legs of the drawers, the upper portion of each of these tubular webs being cut and certain of the cut edges being sewed together, so as to form the upper or body portion of the drawers.
In Fig. 1 of thedrawings, 1 1 represent the leg portions of the drawers, and 2 the upper or body portion, the latter-having a central seam 3 at the front, an open crotch portion 4, and overlapping diagonal flaps 5 at the rear, these flaps extending from the bottom of the crotch to the rear waistband 6 of the drawers.
the slitted portion of one web is then united to the corresponding edge of the slitted pordesired for the front seam3 of the drawers say from the upper edge of each web down to tion of the other web throughout the length about the point lO-that portion 11 of the slit the various cut edges being finished in any desirable manner and the drawers having the usual plackets 12 formed therein and provided with waistbands in the ordinary way. By this means I produce a pair of drawers without any waste of the knitted fabric, the garment having but one seam at the front, the leg portions of the drawers being wholly seamless and elastic throughout, and the garment being therefore more comfortable to the wearer than such garments as usually constructed, the fact that but one short seam is necessary in the production of the garment rendering it easier and cheaper to manufacture than usual.
The drawers can be made without the open crotch, if desired, the seam 3 in such case extending down to the bottoms of the flaps 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pair of knitted drawers having seam less legs and a body portion with central seam and overlapping diagonal flaps, substantially as specified.
2. Apair of knitted drawers having seamle'ss legs and a body portion with open crotch, central seam and overlapping diagonal flaps, substantially as specified.
3. A pair of knitted drawers comprising a pair of seamless tubular webs diagonally slitted in their upper portions and having corresponding edges of these diagonal slits secured together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' HENRY M. LOVE.
