My invention relates to garments of the bifurcated type and particularly to pajama pants and trousers, although it will be understood that my invention is also applicable to use in the manufacture of trousers or pants'for lounging or beach wear or for anyother uses where extreme fulness inthe seat and crotch thereof is desired. Thus, the invention is also applicable to use in the manufacture of underwear, such as shorts, as well as pants for pajamas and outer wear. a a

This invention is an improvement on my inventionas disclosed in prior Patent No. 1,740,554, issued December 24, 1929, the primary object of the invention being to provide pants, shorts or trousers generally of the pajama type in which the seat and crotch is provided with extreme fulness for comfort when the garment is in use and comprised of the minimum number of elements or parts to facilitate the furnishing of fulness and comfort and also minimize the cost of manufacture.

Whereas, in my former patent, aforesaid, there is provided an insert which, cooperating with the rear leg portionsof the garment, fulness is DIO- vided in the crotch and seat portions of said garment, it is the object of thisinvention to so design and construct the garment as to avoid the necessity of providing an insert, but at the same time provide fulness in the seat and crotch portions as may be afforded by such insert as disclosed in the patentafore'said. I

In the manufacture ofpajama pants and other pants of a similar nature, and in the manufacture of shorts of the ordinary and conventional character, the wearer is frequently annoyed and made uncomfortable by closeness of the seat and binding of the crotch portions. In fact, the seam in the back of the seat and at the crotch portions of the garment so constructed binds the wearers to such an extent that they become most uncomfortable. Some of these garments are made to appear as though fulness is provded' through the medium of various inserts, but in many instances these inserts are provided by manufacturers to save material and, in fact, are not provided for the comfort of the wearer; Where inserts of the type illustrated in my former patent are provided,

great fulness is provided "in the seat and at the crotch portions, due to the shape of the insert, the

shape of the leg portions to correspond therewith and the fulness created at the crotch portion through the shape of the lower portion of the inse'rt. Such inserts, as aforesaid, require loss of material and extra operations, including extra seams, all of which adds to the cost of of such garments.

My invention contemplates the provision of a structure which will afford all the benefits of a pajama, trouser, short, or other garment made in accordance with the invention shown, described and/or claimed in my former patent, wherein "a drop and full seat is provided, but which will, at the same time, eliminate annoying seams, costly operations in construction and, in fact, produce a more full and comfortable seat and crotch construction than that heretofore provided.

With these and numerous other objects in view, 'my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to, and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. V

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughoutithe several views, where in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention. leg portions are formed from a single blank designated by the numeral 5 which not only provides the rear portions of the legs of the garment to be formed, but also the seat and back thereof.

While it is capable of designing the leg blanks of a difierent contour, it has been found preferable to shape these blanks, l to 5, inclusive, in the manner illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, as this provides the most desirable shape for comfortable and proper vide the proper fulness at the seat and crotch portions of the garment to be formed therefrom. The edges 6 and l of the respective blanks I and 2 are somewhat arcuately cut and the upper portions of these edges are curved to conform to the upper edges of the blank 5. The outer edges,

8 and 9 of the blank 5 are to be secured, respectively, to the edges 6 and l of the respective leg blanks I and 2, whereby to form the outer leg seams H] of the garment, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. i

The opposite edges H and i2 of the respective leg blanks l and 2' are also curved as shown from the pints l3 to the lower edges thereof so as to provide an increasingwidth upwardly in said blanks. At the point Is the blanks H and I2 are notched as shown at M and from the inner edge of the notch each blank and 2 is arcuately curved as shown at I and the edge of the blank then tapered somewhat inwardly toward the upper edge of the blank, as shown at it.

As previously mentioned, the rear leg portions 3 and 4 are formed from a blank 5 which also includes the seat and back of the garment. The leg portions 3 and t are joined by a crotch portion the edge of which is compoundly curved to provide a pair of recessed edges H on opposite sides of a central arcuate tongue or extension IS.

The blank 5 has extreme fulness measured through the hip and seat portions of the blank and the upper or back portions of said blank are cut 'or tapered inwardly as shown at 19.

When the front leg blanks l and. 2 are placed, respectively, upon the legs 3 and 4 of the blank 5, the edges 6 and I of the former meeting with the edges 8 and 9 of the latter are. stitched together to form the outer leg seams Hi. The edges I and 12 are respectively engaged with the inner edges of the respective leg portions 3 and 4 of the blank 5 and stitched together to form the inner leg seams 20 of the garment, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. In the formation of these last mentioned seams, the notched portions M are caused to conform to the compoundly curved crotch line of the blank 5, that is, with the edges of the portions I! and I8, and stitched together to form'the crotch seam 2|, which becomes continuous with the inner leg seams 29 of the garment. Fromthis crotch seam 2|, the leg blanks l and 2 are stitched together for a short distance at their edges It to form the longitudinal seam 22 leading from the crotch seam 21 to the fly portion of-the garment, the latter being designated in the drawings by the numeral 23.

The cutting of the blank 5 in the manner to provide extreme width throughthe seat and hip portions, as aforesaid, is important to give fulness transversely or circumferentially of the garment. However, the cutting of the leg blanks in the manner shown and described, with the leg blanks l and 2 of considerable fulness and a considerable width created between the leg blanks 3 and 4 with the co'mpoundly curved crotch line as shown and heretofore described, is also of exfit, and to also protreme importance since the stitching of the leg blanks together in this fashion permits an extreme fulness in the seat longitudinally, that is, it provides a bag-like or drop seat as more particularly illustrated in the garment as shown in Figure 3, said drop seat being designated specifically by the numeral 24. Thus, when such a garment is applied to the body, as best illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, there is ample fulness transversely and longitudinally, so that the crotch portion and lower seat portion of the garment are normally spaced or dropped below the crotch of the wearer. When the wearer is seated, crouched or assumes other postures, either in lounging, walking, bending, exercising or reclining, the garment will always be loose and comfortable and the ordinary binding or pulling on the body of the wearer, resulting in annoyance to the wearer, as well as undue strain and stretch on the garment, will be avoided.

It is more or less immaterial as to the manner in which the waistband of the gafmentembody ing such an improvement is constructed, as the seat construction hereina'bove described is ap plicable to any type of bifurcated garment, whether it be for underwear, pajamas or outer wear, so long as a garment is desired in which looseness and fulness at the seat and crotch portions thereof is desired. In the drawings, however, I have shown a waistband designated by the numeral 25 which is tubular in formation and which has between the sides and back thereof elastic strips 26 inserted therein, the material being gathered and stitched as specifically shown in Figure 3 which accentuates the bag like or drop seat 24 so that the same appears substantially as an external box-pleat seat. Adjustable side tabs 21 are also shown in engagement with the buttons 28, additional buttons 29 being provided, whereby adjustment of the waistband may be made according to the wishes or desires of the wearer.

When the garment is not in use and suspended with the front and rear portions of the waistband being held on the same plane, the appearance thereof will be that illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. From this position, it may be readily observed that there is a curved crotch line or crotch seam below which drops the seat 24'. When the garment is applied to use, as best illustrated in Figure}! of the drawings, the body of the wearer will fill out theback and the seat of the garment to some extent so as to draw up said seat toward the crotch of the wearer, but, nevertheless, it will be observed that the crotch seam and the lower portion of the seat of the garment will be dropped or spaced below the crotch of the wearer.

As the leg, crotch and seat portions of the garment are the portions thereof employed in the embodiment of the invention, I have purposely refrained from showing and describing various other details of construction involved in the manufacture of a pair of pajamas or other bifurcated garment to which this invention may be applicable. scribed such features as would appear to be necessary specifically in presenting the features of the invention. It will be understood, of course, that I do not wish to be limitedto any particular type of bifurcated garment as the invention, as aforesaid, may be applicable to any such garment for use as underwear, outer wear,

In thisconnection I have shown in Figure a slight modification wherein outer side seams may be eliminated. In carrying out this idea, I have shown a single blank is used to provide front and rear leg portions, a seat and back portion of a garment. The blank is cut of extra width to rovide a front leg portion 30 which joins a rear leg portion 3! and a second front .leg portion 32 joining a rear leg portion 33. These leg portions 3| and 33 are the lower portion of a center portion 34 which constitutes the seat and back portion of the garment. The outer edges of the leg portions 30 and 32 are cut in the same fashion as are the leg portions I and 2 of the preferred form of the invention heretofore described and particularly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The blank is deeply notched from the upper edge as shown at 35 and 36 which permit the upper portions of the leg element to be shaped and secured to the upper portions of the back and seat of the garment. The leg portions are adapted to be folded along the dotted lines 37 and 38, which constitute the sides of the leg portions of the garment in lieu of outer side seams. The blank is compoundly curved as shown at 39 in the same manner as the blank 5 is compoundly curved, as shown in Figure 2, between the leg elements 3i and 33, so that when the outer edges of the leg elements 30 and 32 are properly stitched to the leg elements 3| and 33, there will be provided the proper crotch seam with great width between the leg portions and also there will be provided the extreme full seat, both longitudinally and transversely, the same as that illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings representing the preferred form of the invention. In other words, the same seat will be provided in this modified form as that heretofore described, the only difference in construction being the use of a single blank to form the leg portions and feet portions instead of three blanks.

It will be seen from the foregoing description and the Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, covered thereby, that in the back and seat portions of the garment which provides this exceptionally full bag-like or drop seat, no seams are provided therein. It would be possible, of course, to so construct the garment that a seam may be formed in the seat and yet not be objectionable. I have shown such a structure in the modified form shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. In this instance, a blank identical to that illustrated in Figure 5 is provided and split down the back to form the two sections 40 and 4|. The sections are adapted to be secured together at the edges 42 and 43. Such a blank when secured together may be folded and stitched to form a garment such as illustrated in Figure 3 illustrating the preferred form of the invention, except that a seam will be projected through the bag-like seat. There will be no outer leg seams and merely inner side seams along the legs with a blank of this construction.

Again, the seat may be in the form of an insert, as illustrated in Figure 7. Here I have shown a blank which is constituted of three elements, 44, 45 and 53. The element 46 represents an insert to form the seat and upper portion of the back of the garment, the lower portion of the insert being designated by the numeral 41 which, when the insert 46 is stitched to the curved edges of the elements 44 and 45, will produce a crotch line of double compound formation such as illustrated in the preferred 'form of my invention heretofore described and shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.

I have found it also possible to produce a garment'with a crotch line slightly different in formation than that heretofore shown and described. In Figure 8 I have shown such a blank designated by the numeral &8. This blank is of the type shown in Figure 5 in which the legs may be folded so that only inner side seams will be provided. The space between the leg portions 49 and '53 is filled by the seat portion which has a dependent tongue or the like, 5|, which, instead of being compoundly curved at the edges thereof, is tapered to form a V or pointed projection. When the edges of the leg portions are stitched to conform thereto, a full and dependent seat and crotch portions will be created in the resultant garment.

In Figure 9 I have shown a still further modified form of the invention wherein a blank 52 is shown of the type similar to that shown in Figures 5 and 8. Here, however, the leg portions are connected by a seat portion 53 which has its lowermost edge 54 deeply concaved with arcs on two sides substantially meeting at a sharp point 55. When the outer edges of the leg portions are folded and stitched to the curved crotch line 54, an extremely full seat and crotch portion will also be formed in the resultant garment.

In describing the garment hereabove, I have not referred to the same as being made of any particular material, While pajamas, shorts, lounging and sport trousers and other types of garments to which my invention would be applicable are ordinarily made of a textile fabric, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to such fabric, as other types of fabric may be employed.

From the foregoing description and the construction of my improved garment, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, comparatively inexpensive and efficient means for providing a seat and crotch of extreme fulness which will afford exceptional comfort to the wearer and which will, at the same time, preserve the garment against binding, stretching, straining and tearing under normal use. It will be further seen that I have provided a means for carrying out the various objects of the invention heretofore set forth.

While I particularly describe the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is apparent that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to.

What I claim is:

In pajamas and the like garments, a wide rear section having a body of greater width than onehalf the circumference of the waist and hips of the garment and forming a seat and back for the garment and rear leg portions extending downwardly from the body, the rear leg portions being spaced transversely from each other and the lower portion of the body between the upper ends of the said leg portions forming a rear crotch portion, the said crotch forming portion of the body being provided with a depending tongue midway its width to impart sagging fullness to the rear portion of the crotch of the garment, said tongue having a downwardly bowed arcuate lower edge merging into upwardly bowed arcuate edges constituting curved continuations of upper ends of straight inner side edges of the rear leg portions, the outer side edges of the said leg portions extending upwardly in straight lines above the crotch to the hip line of the body and being then curved inwardly and merging into diagonally extending upwardly converging side edges of the body to provide an upwardly tapered body of greatest width across the hip line of the garment, a pair of duplicate front sections of less than half the width of the rear section having outer side edges conforming to outer side edges of the rear section and stitched to the said outer side edges of the rear section to form forwardly disposed outer side seams for the legs and body of the garment, the inner side edges or the front sections each-being notched at the crotch line, edges or the notches being cut to conform to the lower edge of the crotch portion of the rear section and stitched thereto, and the portions of the inner side edges or the front sections between the notches and their lower ends being stitched. to inner side edgesof the leg portions of the rear section'- to form rearwardly disposed inner side 10 seams for legs of the garment.
