Be it known that I, J EREMIAH A. SCRIVEN, a resident of the borough of Mahattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nether Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to nether garments, more particularly to drawers, although my invention is not confined to nether garments or drawers.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which like reference-letters indicate like parts, Figure l represents a pair of drawers embodying my invention and upon the person of the wearer. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the drawers. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an underneath view of the crotch of the garment; and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4, showing the `mode of making the crossing of the insertions.

In the drawings, ct and. b indicate the material from which the tubular leg portions and the tubular body portions are made. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of these portions a b is very large and with the exception of the insertions hereinafter mentioned and the small gussets or gores c constitute the leg portions of the garment and the greater part of the body.

d and e are insertions of a material less elastic than the material constituting the portions a and b. These insertions cross at the crotch of the garment and are herein shown as at the back of the garment. The lower end of the insertion d is sewed to the piece a by lines of stitchingfg, except at the bottom, where the small gore c is set i'n. The insertion e is similarly secured to the material of the other tubular member, which is similarly constructed, by lines of stitching h z'. A suitable triangular or other shaped back piece j is let into the back of the garment below the waistband la. The upper end of the insertion e is secured by a line of stitching Z to the piece ct and by a line of stitching m to the triangular piecej. The upper end of the insertion d is secured by a line of stitching o to the member b and by line of stitching p to the piece j. The garment may likewise be provided with anklets g fr. The insertions d and e cross at or near the crotch of the garthe lines of stitching uniting the insertion to the garment, serve to unite the cross-insertions rmly to each other at the crossing.

It will be understood that the garment may be made of any suitable material and that the portions a and b are of greater elasticity than the cross-insertionsd and e.

The material which I use for the elastic por?- tion of my garment is what is known in the trade as knitted fabric. The material which I use for the inelastic insertion is cotton woven fabric, twill, jean,'llnen, or any other suitable comparatively inelastic material.

The inelastic ins'ertions d and e, `extending, respectively, from left to right and from right to left of the garment, constitute practically rigid diagonal braces that tend to hold the garment in shape and position and at the same time serve to produce economy in its manufacture.

The particular advantages of a nether garment constructed in accordance with my invention are that it will not shrink in the direction of its length and will keep its form, that the relatively inelastic insertion will act as a guide for the foot in slipping into and through the tubular portions ot' the garment, and that the life of the garment will be longer, because the tubular portions are less liable to be torn by the foot than in a garment in which said portions shrink or twist.

Such a garment can also more readily withstand the Vstrain to which it is periodically eX- posed in the washtub. Allthese advantages are gained without any discomfort to the wearer or by adding appreciably to the thickness of any portion of the garment.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secu re byLetters Patent,

An undergarment consisting of a body and leg portions comprisinga knitted elastic fabric provided with non-elastic-fabric inserts or separating-strips, extending from substantially the bottom of said garment to substantially the crotch thereof, whereby the garment may be drawn onto the person of the wearer and the leg portions be guided by the non-elastic inserts.

An undergarment consisting of a body and leg portions comprising a knitted elastic fabric provided with non-elastic-fabric inserts or separating-strips,crossed at the crotch of the garment, and extending from substantially the top to substantially the bottom thereof whereby the elastic garment may be drawn onto the person of the wearer and the leg portions be guided by the non-elastic iuserts, and the entire garment be Stiffened, as 2o set forth.
