VILLIAM F. KNEIP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,VASSIGNOR TO THE HAY da TODD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF MICHIGAN.
GA'RM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,262, dated J' une 18, 1889.
Application filed December 10, 1888. Serial No. 293,111. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, IVILLTEAM F. KNEIB, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following` is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawers or similar garments, its object being to provide the necessary fullness in the rear position or seat of the garment with a cheap and simple construction in the parts.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a rear View of a pair of drawers constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the filling-piece separate from the other parts of the garment.
As shown in the said drawings, A indicates the body of a pair of drawers, consisting of a knit fabric, and having vertical seams a a at the inner sides of the legs by which the pieces of knit fabric constituting the front and rear parts of the garment are connected with each other at their edges. B-is a iilling-piece, which is provided at its lower end with two downwardly-tapered triangular projections b b, separated by a notch, and is preferably made broadest at its lower part and tapered upwardly. The piece B is attached along the inner margins of the projections b b to the front parts vof the garment below the point ZJ and at the sides 0f the crotch, the seams thus formed being indicated by b b2 b b2. The outer margins of the filling-piece are att-ached to vthe margins of the rear parts of the gaiment, the seams extending from tle lcwer enls of the projections b b to the top of said fillingLpiece between the points indicated by b2 b2 and b3.
In the particular garment shown the fillingl piece is tapered to a point at its upper end, and terminates at the waist-line; but it may be otherwise shaped at its upper end or ter- 5o minated at a lower point, as found convenient or desirable. v
It will of ,course be understood that the filling-piece above described may be used in combination or other similar garments as well as in drawers, the upper end of the -iilling-piece being shaped and connected with the adjacent parts of the garment in any manner found desirable, according to the particular manner in which the garment is made.
One important advantage gained by the employment of the filling-piece, shaped and inserted in the manner described, is that it gives breadth or fullness in the garment at the point where it is most needed to make the garment lit the formnamely, opposite and partially below as well as above the crotch b', as will be readily seen by inspection of the drawings, Fig. 1. This particular result is of course obtained by making the lower end of the filling-piece forked or with two projections, as shown; or, in other words, by making a V-shaped notch in the lower end of said filling-piece, and by securing the front pieces or portions of the garment tothe inner edges of the said projections, so that they extend below the crotch or junction of the legs of the garment in the manner illustrated.
The particular form given to the outer or side margins of the filling-piece is immaterial as far as the main result above set forth is concerned, and the said side margins maybe more or less convex, as shown, or otherwise shaped.
1t is entirely obvious that the novel result of giving fullness at the desired point, as above described, will be obtained whatever be the particular shape given to the upper part of the fillingpiece, and my invention i's therefore not limited to a tilling-piece made of tapered form, as above described.
While my invention is more especially intended for application to knit garments, it may be applied to articles made of other material employed in the construction of clothing.
I claim as my inventionm The improved garment described, having :L rem" lling-pieee for giving fullness in the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as seat, which filling-piece is provided with two my invention I affix my signature in presproj eetons at its lower end separated by a ence of two Witnesses.
notch and united to the front partof the gm- XVILLIAM F. KNEIP. ment along the margins of said notch, and to ltnessesz the rem' part of the garment along its outer C. CLARENCE POOLE,
edges, snlglstfnltinlly as described. M. E. DAYTON.
