PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN LANDERS, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
AOVEFIALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,407, dated June 28, 1904.
' Application iled October 2l, 1903.
1Y0 all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, JOHN LANDERS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Lebanon, in
the county of Grafton'and State of New Hampshire, liave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vearing-Apparel, of which' the `following is a s 'pecication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
Y, My invention relates to' wearing-apparel, and
more particularlyto that class of bifurcat'ed nether. garments known as overalls Overalls as now generally made are provided with side openings alined with the outside seam Vof each leg to Jfacilitate the putting on and removal of the garment. This construction necessitates side crotclies at the bottoms of these openings, which in usev are subject to considerable strain, witli a resulting liability to tear, and thus rip out the entire upper portion of the side seam: To avoid this, it has been found necessary to employ stay stitches extending across the bottom of this crotch. In manufacturing the garment the said pattern and manner of assembling has been found to involve several distinct operations as to each leg of vthe garment-to unite the front and the back pieces, to put in the said stay-stitches, to finish.
vthe pocket-opening, and to finish the portion 'overall wherein the assembling of the front and back pieces of each 'leg will be accomplished in a single operation and thelcrotch at each side'will be so arranged as to relieve the side seam of all strains, and thus minimized' the liability of the tearing of the said crohtclifr l and the resultant ripping of the said side seam.`
A further object is toprovide an overall ofy a pattern wherein` the pocket-opening will bei" stayed and the bib or apron'edge finished by the same outside seam employed to unite the y front and the back pieces of each leg. In fact,
the object of the invention may be summarized leg.
Serial No. 177,846. (No model.)
as consisting in the production of an overall with few operations, the outside seam of which will serve to unite the front and the back pieces of each leg, stay the pocket-opening, iinish the entire side seam, including the bib or apron, and be in such a relation to the crotch of the liability of being ripped through strains thereon occasioned by the tearing of the crotch of 'the said side opening.
The invention'c'onsists in providing in Wearing-apparel an overall each leg of Which comprises a back piece having a recessed portion, a side piece overlapping said recessed portion, permanently attached to said back piece, and
lforming with said recessed portion a side opening recessed relative to the side seam, fastening'means whereby said opening may be closed, and a front piece presenting a continuous edge conforming to the Contour of the edge of said back piece, whereby one continuous seam unites said back piece and `said front piece, and in such other novel features vof the pattern for and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter set forth anddescribed, and
more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a pair of overalls embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the relation of parts and the manner of forming the side opening on the back piece of each Fig. 3 is a detail View of the upper part ofthe rear edge of the front piece of the leg, showing the bib and the pocket arrangement;
' and Fig. 4 is a detail modified form of the construction shownin Fig. 2, the side seam being discontinued toward the upper part to more clearly distinguish the relationof the adjoining edges of the front and the back pieces.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
HEach leg ot a pair of overalls isl made similar to the other, and thetwo are united to form the complete garment. To avoid needless repetition, therefore, a description of but 'one leg will be entered into, my invention being applicable in its entirety to each leg.
As overalls are at present made each leg is composed of two pieces cut according to two side opening as to' relieve the said seam of' IOO distinct patternsthe front and the back. rI`he general contour of these pieces is immaterial to my invention eXcept as to the arrangement of the outside seam and the upper adjoining portions of these pieces. In the accompanying drawings the back piece of each leg is designated by the letter a. In the preferred form of my invention this piece t comprises the ordinary leg-pattern, as above referred to, but differs therefrom in that toward the upper front edge a' thereof a slot about a half-inch deep is nicked and the portion thus separated from the rest of said edge is turned backward upon the piece a and stitched to form a reinforced portion which is recessed relative to the front edge a. Overlapping the portion is a side piece c, doubled upon itself to avoid a raw edge toward the rear thereof, said side piece being permanently attached to the piece a at a point below said reinforced portion b by means of the cross-stitches (Z in a manner to form between the portion and side piecec a side opening, which will be recessed relative to the side seam. The edge c of the side piece c need not be finished. This edge is in substantial alinement withV the edge a of the piece a. Suitable means for closing the side opening thus formed, as the buttons e on the reinforced portion and the buttonholes e in the side piece c, are provided to facilitate the donning and removal of the overalls.
The front part of each leg comprises the front piece f and the bib or apron g, which are so united as to form one part. A pocketopening L extends diagonally from the point of joinder of the leg and bib downward to a point adjacent to the rear edge f of the piece An ordinary hanging pocket /t' is secured in the proper relation to the said opening it. The edge f of the pieces f and g is preferably straight, but of course, if necessary, may be varied to meet the requirement for conformity with the edge a of the back piece of the leg.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the general details of construction and arrangement of parts is as in the preferred form of the invention, the sole difference residing in the manner of applying the side piece c2 to the part (t. In this form of the invention the upper part of the piece ce is cnt down from the top to a point about opposite the lower edge of the pocket-opening, and a portion of the fabric is turned upon itself to form the reinforced portion b. rIhe side piece c2, however, instead of simply being doubled upon itself and then secured to the part t is doubled, so as to inclose the rear edge of the strip b2, separated from the rest of the part a by being cut as above and sewed thereto in addition to being secured by the cross-stitches c3 to the main portion of the piece ct.
In the application of my invention the several parts constituting the front and the back piece of each leg, respectively, are assembled and sewed together as heretofore described, the various parts being more conveniently handled and sewed when so assembled. In uniting these parts 4the edges a and f are properly turned and brought close together, and a seam, as c', (preferably a double seam, as shown,) is run the entire length of the leg from the bottom thereof to the waist-line and the bottom portion of the bib or apron. This seam unites the piece a and side piece c to the piece f, serves to stay the lower end of the pocket-opening z, where the greatest strains occur, and also finishes up the rear edge of the lower part of the said bib or apron. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the said seam c' unites the piece t and strip b2, to which the side piece c2 is in part attached so as to practically constitute a part thereof, to the front piece f, as above described, the two forms and the results attained by each when completed being substantially identical. By cornbining the several parts in the manner indicated I am enabled to perform by a single operation what has heretofore required three distinct operations on different machines or else by hand, and the saving in the cost of production is material. In addition to this saving of labor the garment when completed is durable and the crotch of each side opening is not liable to tear, the relation of the outside seam to said crotch being such that all strains will be absorbed entirely by the stitches securing said side piece c in position, and thus relieve said seam of all strains.
It is not my intention to limit this invention to the precise details or general design of garment as herein shown and described, as it is apparent that this particular form of side seam and side opening is adaptable to various other patterns of garments.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is-
l. In wearing-apparel, an overall each leg of which comprises a back piece having a recessed portion adjacent to the top thereof, and a side piece permanently attached to said back piece overlapping said recessed portion and forming therewith a side opening recessed relative to the side seam, fastening means whereby said opening may be closed, a front piece presenting a continuous edge conforming to the contour of the edge of said back and said side pieces and a continuous side seam uniting the adjoining edges of the said back and the said side pieces, and the said front piece.
2. In wearing-apparel, an overall each leg of which comprises a back piece having a recessed portion adjacent to the top thereof, formed by turning a portion of the upper edge of said piece upon itself, a side piece permanently attached to said back piece at a point below said recessed portion, overlapping and forming therewith a side opening IOO IIO
recessed relative to the side seam and fastening means whereby Said opening may be closed, a front piece having a diagonal pocketopening, one end of which is adjacent to the rear edge thereof, said front piece presenting a continuous edge conforming to the contour of the edge of said back and said side pieces, and a continuous seam uniting the adjoining edges of the said back and the said side pieces, and said front piece, and acting as stay-stitching for one end of said pocket-opening.
8. In wearing-apparel, an overall each leg of which comprises a back piece having a recessed portion adjacent to the top thereof formed by turning a portion of the upper edge of said piece upon itself` a side piece permanently attached to said back piece at a point below said recessed portion, overlapping and forming therewith a side opening recessed relative to the side seam, and fastening means whereby said opening may be closed, a'front piece, a bib or apron connected to and forming a part thereof, said front piece having a diagonal pocket-opening eX- tending from said bib to a point adjacent to the rear edge thereof, said front piece and the lower rear portion of said bib presenting a continuous edge conforming to the contour of the edge of said back and said side pieces, and a continuous seam uniting the adjoining edges of said back and said side pieces and the said front piece and its apron or bib, acting as stay-stitching for one end of said pocketopening and finishing the rear edge of said bib or apron.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto aflxed my signature, this 16th day of October, 1903, in the presence of tWo witnesses.
JOHN LANDERS.
