Description

o. H". KEEP.
SHIRTS.
No.188,640. Patented March 20,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER H. KEEP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,640, dated March 20, 1877 application filed April 21, 1876.
' ed certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description there-- of, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a partv of this specification, in which is shown a plan view of my partial shirt as prepared for sale. 1
My invention is an improvement upon a similar article for which Letters Patent No. 123,721 were issued to me upon the 13th day of February, 1872, and the same reissued No. 6,749, bearing date of November 16, 1875, and is intended to increase the facility with which persons who are not experts may complete the shirt; to which end it consists, as a new. article of manufacture, in a partly-made shirt, having its front, back, sleeves, and bosom fitted and sewed together, leaving the side seams of the body and of the sleeves unsewed, and said sleeves without wristbands, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
1n the annexed drawing, A represents the front, B the bosom, O the neck-band, D the yoke, E the back, and F and F the sleeves of a shirt, all constructed and combined in the usual manner, to enable them to comform to the shape of a person having certain neck and chest measurements and a certain slope of the shoulders.
The side seams of the body and of the sleeves are left unsewed, as they require no particular skill to complete; but those parts which embrace the neck and shoulders of the wearer and in the fitting and joining of which much skill and a special knowledge of shirtmaking is required, are complete. The edges of the front and back and the lower ends of the sleeves have sufiicient surplus stock to enable said parts to be fitted to the person who is to Wear the shirt; and in order to complete the article it is only necessary that the side seams of the body and sleeves should be sewed and the wristbands attached.
By means of my improvement purchasers can obtain, at a comparatively small cost, partial shirts, which fit neatly and can be completed at a trifling additional expense, and which, when finished, will cost much less than those completed by manufacturers.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a partlyniade shirt, having its front, back, sleeves, and bosom fitted and sewed together, leaving the side seams of the body and of the sleeves unsewed and said sleeves without wristbands, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of April, 1876.
