UNION GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, lfilfi.
Application filed. January 4, 1915. 7 Serial No, 355.
To all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, ANNA L. LIPPITT, of Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Union Garments, of which the following is a specification,
' This invention relates to undergarments, and has reference more particularly to garments of the union or one-piece type, as distinguished from those in which the body and leg portions are constructed as separate and independent pieces.
The objects of the invention are to produce a garment of this character which will be composed of few pieces, will possess the minimum number of seams, will be neat in appearance, which will afford a superior it to the body, and which may be economically manufactured, and with these objects in view my invention consists primarily in forming the garment of two complementary sections, provided each with a lateral extension, the said sections being folded longitudinally and secured together, and the said extensions being folded rearwardly to the back of the garment and having their adj acent edges secured together to form a rear flap, means being provided for fastening the flap detachably in closed position.
I believe it to be new in a garment of this type to form the rear flap, by providing ex which extensions are folded back to the rear and have their adjacent edges connected together, and my invention is intended, as claimed herein, to embrace such construction broadly, and this whether the extensions are formed as integral portions, of the respective sections, or whether they are attached as separate pieces thereto. I prefer, however, to form the extensions as integral parts of the sections, self also to be the first to construct the complete garment of but two complementary sections each provided with an integral exten sion on its front portion, which extensions are folded back around to the rear and there connected together so as to conjointly form a rear external flap. V
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved garment. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same,-
showing the flap in closed position. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the flap in open position. Fig. l is a bottom plan view of the seat or crotch of the garment. Fig. 5 is or opening 6 therein at the back.
and in this connection I believe mya plan view of one of the two complementary sections of which the garment is formed.
Referring to the drawings: In the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, which is the form of construction I prefer to adopt, the garment is made up of two complementary sections 1, 1 each of the form and general contour shown in Fig. 5. Each section as here shown, consists of a body portion 2 and a leg portion 3, a lateral extension 4r being provided at the junction of the body and leg portions on that edge of the section which will be at the front in the finished garment. These sections are each folded longitudinally and placed together edge to edge, the edges of said sections at the back being fastened together permanently by means of stitches 5, 5 extending from the upper ends of the sections to a point some distance above the crotch of the garment so as to leave a vertical slit The lateral extensions l are folded rearwardly, each around the rear edge 7 of the leg portion of the section to which it is connected, and the adjacent edges of said extensions are suitably connccted permanently together by stitching or otherwise, as indicated at 8, thereby forming a rear external flap 9 adapted to close over the rear opening 6 before alluded to. The flap is connected at one of its side edges to the rear portion of the section at that side, preferably permanently, as for instance by stitches 10, and the opposite edge of the flap is likewise connected to the back of the garment, but only for a portion of its length below the crotch, preferably permanently, as by stitches 11, thereby leaving the remainder of its side edge and its top disconnected, so that the flap can be folded downward to open position as shown in Fig. 3. It is adapted to be detachably closed over the opening 6, by means of a button 12 applied to the rear of the garment, or by equivalent detachable connecting means.
The front adjacent edges 13 of the body portion of the sections are likewise con nected together, but preferably in a detachable manner as for instance by the buttons 14:, in order to permit the garment to be applied to the body, the detachable connection of the edges extending from the upper ends of the same to the crotch, as shown more particularly in Fi 1. The adjacent edges of the leg portions of the sections are suit ably connected permanently together below the point where the lateral extensions fold around said edges, as by stitching let, or
otherwise.
It will be observed from the construction described, that the inner edges of the leg portions at and below thecrotch are closed by the extensions 4 folded around from the front, thereby avoiding the necessity of transverse seams in the crotch, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 3. Further, it will be observed that by reason of the form ofthe rear flap and itsmanner of connection with the sections, the rear opening may befully uncovered without the necessity of turning the flap down below the crotch. Also it will be observed that by reason of the fact that'the, entire garment is made up of but two pieces or sections, a minimum of seams will be required, a close and superior fit afforded, and theproduction of the garment will be attended with little expense.
struction of the parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I 1
1. A union garment comprising a body portion and connected leg portions, the in ner sides of the leg portions adjacent their junction with the body portion being formed by extensions of the material at the inner sides of the legs, which extensions are folded around between the legs from one side of the garment to the other, thereby forming folds at the inner edges of the and constituting a crotch free from transverse seams. v
.2. A union garment comprising twobody sections having leg portions, said sections cured together at the front and rear and being provided each with a'lateral extension, said extensions being folded around at the lower portion of the body from one side of thegarment to the other, thereby formbeing each folded longitudinally and seing a crotch free from transverse seams, and
said extensions beingfastened together at their ad acent edges to'form an external flap. I
A union garment comprising two sec- 1310115 folded longitudinally and secured together at the front and;rear, sa1dsections being provided at the front at their inner edgeswith extensions folded around to the two complementary sections rear of the garment and forming a crotch free from transverse seams, and'said extensions being secured together to form afiap at-the rear of the garment.
l. In a union garment, the combination of two sections folded longitudinally and" connected together at their adjacent edges so as to leave a back opening, said sections being provided each on its front with a'latv era-l extension, and said extensions being folded rearwardly around to the rear to form a crotch free fromtransverse seams, V
and having their adjacent edges connected together to form a flap at the rear of the: garment, and means for connecting said flap detachably in closed position over the opening.
5. In a union garment, the combination of;
two complementary sections comprising:
being folded longitudinally and provided at its inner edge at its front with a lateral ex tension, the adjacent edges of the bod-ypor tions at the back being secured together, and the said extensions being foldedrearwardly and extended at the back and secured together at their adj acent' edges to form a rear flap, means for fastening said-flap detachably in closed position, and means for con necting the front adjacent edges of the body portions of'the sections detachably together.
7 In a union garment, the combination of two complementary sections comprising each a leg and a body portion, said sections being folded longitudinally and having the inner adjacent edges of the body portions. 7
secured together at the front and back, lateral extensions on thefront of the leg por tionsr of said sections folded ii'earwardly around the edges .ofthe; back portions. of said sections to the rear, said extensions having their inner, adjacent edges secured to gether to form a rear flap, and means for fastening said flap detachably in closed o: sition.
8. In a union garment, the combination of comprising each a leg and a body portion, being folded longitudinally and having the together at the front and rear, extensions on the front inner edges of said sections folded rearwardly and extended attheback with their inner edges secured together to saidsectionsl adjacent edges of the body portions secured form a rear flap, one edge of said flap being fastened in place at the rear of the garment at one side, and the opposite edge of said flap being free, so that the flap may be opened, and means for fastening said flap detachably in closed position.
9. In a union garment, the combination of two complementary sections comprising each a leg and a body portion, said sections being folded longitudinally and having the inner edges of the body portions secured together at the front and back, extensions on the front adjacent edges of the sections Copies of this patent may be obtained for in proximity to the crotch, said extensions being folded around to the rear and connected together to form a rear flap, and means for fastening the flap detachably in closed position, each section having the inner edges of its leg portion secured together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of December, 191 in the presence of tWo attesting Witnesses.
