To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT LEE Jonas,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping-Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates in general to sleeping garments, and while the garment disclosed in this application is particularly suitable for children it may also be made in larger sizes adapted to be worn by adults.

An important object of my invention is to provide a sleeping garment of this character embodying foot portions adapted to receive and inclose the feet of the wearer but which will permit the wearer to withdraw his feet from the foot portions of the garment so that they Will project outside the foot portions whenever the wearer so desires.

A further object of the invention is to so construct these openings through which the feet may be extended outside the foot portions that the feet may be freely extended outside and withdrawn into the foot portions with minimum effort and which, when the feet are inside. will be virtually self-closing so as to adequately protect the wearer fro the cold.

These and other objects and advantages of my invention will be better appreciated from the following description when considered in connection with the accompany ing drawings. Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a sleeping garment embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear view showing the attachment of the drop seat to the center of the back;

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another position of the drop seat when adjusted to provide increased length; and

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view partially in section, showing the construction of one of the self-closing openings through which a wearers foot may be extended outside the garment.

On the drawings reference character 5 indicates generally the body of the garment. which is made in the form of a union suit so as to provide legs 6. the body portion being equipped with the usual sleeves 7. 6b The garment body preferably opens in the back. the opening being adapted to be closed by the usual buttons 8.

The drop seat of the garment is provided as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 at its upper edge with a relatively wide band 9 provided at its ends with button holes 11 and 19 adapted to be attached to buttons 13 and 14 re spectively, secured to the body of the garment adjacent the side seams. In the center of the back and substantially at the waist-line I have located two buttons '15 and 16, disposed one above the. other and spaced :1 short distance apart. The hand 9 of the drop seat is also provided at the center with button holes 17 and id. similarly spaced apart and adapted to be simultaneously buttoned over the buttons 15 and 16, as shown in Fig. 2. \Vhen the band of the drop seat is engaged with both of the e buttons a doubly strong support is atlorded to the center of the drop seat so that the possibility of the buttons being torn off is materially decreased. \Vhen the child grows so that the garment becomes too short in the crotch and seat. and is consequently uncomfortable. the button hole 17 may be buttoned onto the lower button 16. thus increasing the eflective length of the seat approximately 1% inches. This adjustability of the seat also permits the garment to be adjusted to wearers of different sizes.

Since garments of this character are customarily worn for protection against cold it is desirable in most instances that the feet of the wearer also receive ample protection, and I have therefore provided the lower ends of the leg portions 6 with foot portions 19. some wearers. however, prefer to have their feet at times at least outside the garment. and with a view of making it easy for the wearer to .withdraw his feet from the foot portions and extend them outside the garment whenever desired I have provided suitable openings 21 in the front of each leg portion at the point where the leg portion and Foot portion are joined. or in other words. the opening is in the form of a slit extending transversely across the instep portion of the foot member. These openings extend transversely of the legs, and for the urpose of making them virtually self-clos mg so that the wearers feet will be abundantly protected against cold when inside the foot ortions, I have so designed the garment that the upper edge 22 of each foot portion projects upwardly beneath and is overlapped by the lower edge 23 of the leg portion, thus forming the elongated or tubular opening 21, as shown in Fig. 4. This opennig is disposed at the front of the leg and the overlapping foot and leg portions are permanently sewed together at their edges substantially 011 the side-scams 24 of the legs. It will be obvious that when the wearer's feet are inside the foot portions the openings 21 will be virtually closed by reason of the long overlap afforded by the downwardly extending leg portion which constitutes a closure flap, and when the wearer desires to extend his feet outside all that is necessary is to withdraw them up \vardly from the foot portions and then extend them through the openings 21.

It may be desirable in many instances, however, mrtieularly when the garment is to be worn by very small children to close these openings so as to insure the retention of the feet within the garment. Vv'ith this end in view the underlying part of each foot portion is equipped with a button 25, and the overlying part of the leg portion, which ronstitntes the closure flap, is provided with a button hole 26, whereby the overlapping edges and 23 of the foot and leg portions, respectively, may be securely fastened together to effectually close the openings 21.

It is believed that my invention and the advantages thereof will be readily understood without further description, and it will be obvious that the structural features disclosed are capable of considerable modification within the scope of the invention as defined by the following claim.

I claim:

A sleeping garment including a leg member and a foot member, said foot. member having an opening extending transversely across the instep portion thereof, a closure flap for the opening, said closure flapextending downwardly from the leg portion and overlapping the underlying upper margin of the instep portion of the foot, said overlapped margins being reinforced throughout their length and secured together at the sides of the leg to form a self closing opening, a button secured on the instep part of the foot member, and a button hole formed in the overlying flap of the leg portion to receive said button.
