UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. PFISTER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BATHlNG-'SUIT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,133, dated May 19, 1885.
Application led October 2, 1884.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. PEIsTER, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, havev invented an Improvement in Bathing-Suits; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful knit bathing-suit as a new article of manufacture; and it consists in a suit one half of the body together with one leg and stocking of which are knit in one continuous cylindrical piece or strip, and united down the back to the other half ot' the body, which, together with the other leg and stocking, is knit in a similar manner. Armholes are cut in the body for the reception o1. the sleeves, and a peculiar auxiliary flap covers the shoulders and extends a short distance down the back and front, as I shall hereinafter fully explain by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of one side of the body, leg, and stocking. Fig. 2 is a view of the protecting-flap. Fig. 3 is a view of the entire suit, showing also the sleeves and collar. Fig. 4 is a view of the back of the upper portion of the suit.
rlhe object of my invention is to provide a simple and welltitting bathing-suit.
As shown in Fig. 1, I first knit in one continuous cylindrical piece or strip,A, one side or half of the body, o'neleg, and one stocking. This strip is knit of suitable dimensions, according to proper measurements, and of the proper shape for the portions of the body designed to be covered. I then knit a second strip, similar to A, and which forms the other side or half of the body and the other leg and stocking. The tops of these strips, which form the shoulders, are knit or otherwise closed, and the toes of stocking are similarly closed. I then rip or cut open the inner fold of the strips A from the top down to the crotch, and the two back edges of each I sew or knit together on the line a a, thus closing up the back, Fig. 4. The front edges I leave open, providing one with buttons and the other with button-holes,
(No model.)
or I may adopt any other suitable means for fastening. Into the crotch I let the usual crotch-piece, B. The two pieces or strips A thus united form the complete body, legs, and stockings. The sleeves C are inserted in suitable arm-holes made subsequent to the knitting of the body. These sleeves are knit in the usual cylindrical form, open at both ends, and they may be long or short, as desired, and be provided with stripes of different color.
In Fig. 2 is shown the piece or ilap D of knit goods, which, as shown in Fig. 8, covers the shoulders and back and front for a short distance, whereby a double thickness is formed, which gives a fullness to that part of the suit and makes abetterappearance. The collarE is a separate strip, secured to the top of the body, as shown.
A skirt may be Worn with the suit, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l. As a new article of manufacture, a knit bathing-suit having both halves of the body, together with the legs and stockings, knit in continuous cylindrical pieces and united down the back, substantially as herein described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a knit bathing-suit consisting of the pieces A, each knit in a continuous cylindrical piece and united in the back of the suit, the crotch-piece B, sleeves C. and collar E, substantially as herein described.
3. In a bathing-suit, the combination, with the pieces A, each knit in a continuous cylindrical piece and united, as described, of the auxiliary strip or flap D on the shoulders and extending down back and front a short distance, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. i
JOHN J. PFISTER.
