GARMENT.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Cnnnnnn I-I. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, lave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garments in general, or cloaks of a loose or semi-loose fitting type, and is concerned more particularly with the arrangement of the parts thereof, by which provision is made for the insertion within the garment of an inner lining.

In my invention I seek to provide a garment differing in appearance in no way from the ordinary type of loose or semiloose fitting garment, but which is so an ranged as to permit the insertion between the garment and its lining of an inner lining whenever for purposes of warmth this is desirable. It is thought further to so arrange the garment and inner lining with respect to each other that this operation of insertion or removal of the inner lining may be effected with the maxin'ium of ease and facility. I further aim to arrange in connection with the inner lining, whenever desired, an extra pad or covering so that in cases of extreme weather added warmth may be imparted to the wearer of the garment.

These and other objects of my invention will appear from a detailed description of the garment as illustrated in the drawing and as more clearly hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of a garment embodying my invention with portions thereof cut away to illustrate the construction of the garment; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.

In my invention, there is utilized an outer garment or cloak 3, such as is ordinarily worn, having a lining therefor on the inner side. This lining is secured to the garment in the usual manner as along the front edges 5 and lapel edges 6, around the neck and along the front edges and around the bottom of the garment as far back as is necessary, and also at the sleeves 7, but need not be stitched elsewhere to the garment, this being quite a common practice and unnecessary in loose or semi-loose fitting coats of this character. It follows, therefore, that the lining will be loosely held in position Specification of Letters Patent.

along a portion of the lower edges of the garment, providing an unclosed opening at such points bet-ween the garment and its lining.

In conjunctirm with the garment so constructed, I contemplate the use of an inner lining 8, its position being represented in Fig. 1 by dotted lines. The inner lining is arranged also in the form of a coat or cloak with sleeve sections, if desired, which if used are preferably slotted or divided as along the upper edges of its arms and shoulders. This inner lining may be attached in place between the garment and its lining by insertion therebetween, being passed upwardly into position from the lower edge of the garment. The parts of the sleeves are passed around into position, one from the front and one from the rear side of the garment and brought together preferably near the uppermost side thereof, where they may be secured together as by means of one or more suitable buttons or snaps 9. A very few buttons or snaps 10 may also be employed to retain the inner lining in place between the garment and its lining and to preserve the sleeve sections in proper position, so that a shifting or movement of the inner lining with respect to the other parts of the garment cannot take place. These buttons or snaps are preferably arranged one or two close to the edge of each sleeve, and one or two along the neck of the garment. The use of these fasteners is optional and not at all necessary, owing to the loose fitting character of the garment, but in some cases it may be found preferable to utilize such fastening means.

In the event that the inner lining designed for attachment to the garment is not sufliciently heavy to impart the desired warmth to the wearer, it is possible to sup ply this deficiency by pre-attaching to the inner lining the pad or covering 11, its position being indicated in Fig. l by dotted lines, which pad or covering may be secured to the inner lining in any desired manner as for instance by means of suitable snaps or buttons. This pad may be of any size and shape and be secured wherever desired, but it is not intended that this pad or covering should be utilized except with the inner lining described and only during extreme conditions of weather when such added weight of material is especially desirable.

From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the application of my invention is not limited to garments of any one particular style, shape, or material, but may be employed with garments varying widely in these respects. The garment illustrated, and one contemplated as particularly desirable in connection with the present inven tion, is a loose or semi-loose fitting outer cloak or coat. Such a garment does not require a continuous fastening of the lining at every point, but may, as shown, leave an opening of considerable extent through which the inner lining may be passed into or out of operative position. It is, of course, contemplated that the inner lining described maybe worn with the garment or be detached therefrom according as conditions of temperature may dictate.

With the use of the inner lining forming the subject matter of my invention it is possible to utilize a garment of a given weight under varying conditions of weather with entire comfort, and without disclosing to view the means employed to add extra weight and warmth to the cloak.

I claim:

1. In combination, a garment, a lining on the inner side thereof, a connection between said garment and said lining at certain places only whereby an unclosed opening at another place is provided therebetween, and an inner lining attachable and detaclr able through said unclosed opening adapted to be inserted and secured in operative position between said garment and said lining, substantially as described.

In combination, a garment, a lining on the inner side thereof, a connection between said garment and said lining at certain places only whereby an unclosed opening at another place is provided therebetween, an inner lining attachable and detachable through said unclosed opening adapted to be inserted and secured between said garment and said lining, said inner lining having divided shoulder portions, means for securing together said divided shoulder portions when said inner lining has been placed in operative position, and means for preventing displacement of said inner lining with respect to said garment and linin substantially as described.
