This invention relates to improvements in detachably body linings especially directed to detachable sleeve constructions for such body linings.

More particularly, this invention provides for a detachable sleeve lining for use with a body lining so that the outer garment may be used either with or without the detachable sleeve lining. My body and sleeve lining is so constructed that a finished tailored effect is attained, at the same time providing a shield member which is permitted sufficient vertical movement to amply permit freedom of movement of the arms of the wearer.

A further object of my invention is to provide a detachable lining sleeve member comprising a shield member with the detachable sleeve member so attached that ample ventilation is permitted to the armpits of the person.

A further object of my invention is to provide a shield member which may be easily replaced when it is worn and frayed.

A iurther object of my invention is to provide for an elastic shield member attached to a detachable sleeve lining to permit sufficient play and elasticity so that the natural arm movements of the wearer will not be restricted in any manner.

These and other advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a view of an overcoat looking toward the inside showing the detachable lining therein, partly detached and one of the lining sleeves being positioned outside of the overcoat sleeve and showing the separable fastener connection for detaching the detachable sleeve lining.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing one side of the body lining with the detachable sleeve partly detached and the shield detached from the body lining.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken through line 3--3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the detached body lining showing the detachable sleeve and shield attached in position upon the body lining.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing a modified form of shield attached by stitching to the detachable sleeve.

Referring to the drawing, the outer garment l0 may be made of any desirable material and may be lined or half lined and the sleeves of such outer garment may also be lined. The opposed 55 fronts II and I2 have a flap I3 with a free edge M. A row oi metallic hook fasteners I5 is stitched beneath flap 13 on a tape from approximately one-half the length of the garment running around the collar portion so that flap l4 covers the row of metallic hook fasteners l5 as shown on the left side of Fig. 1 by the dotted line Hi.

The detachable body lining H has a row of complementary hook fasteners l8 also attached approximately one-half the length of the body lining and running around the upper portion of said body lining. Complementary hook fasteners l8 are adapted to interengage the row of slide fasteners l5 by the use of a slide as is well known in the slide fastener art. In order to hold the lower portion of body lining l'l in position, male and female snaps l9 and are attached to the inside of flap l3 and the body lining l1 respectively. The body lining l'l may thus be detached and attached whenever desired.

The outer garment II] has sleeves which of course may be lined or not lined as desired, and it may have all the other general features such as pockets, lapels, collar, etc.

The detachable body lining I! has a pair of detachable sleeve linings 2| made to fit within the sleeves of the outer garment I0, the upper armholes of said detachable sleeve linings 2| have metallic hook fasteners 22 attached to a tape 23 which is stitched virtually entirely around the armhole with the exception of a small portion at the lowermost portion of the armhole. The detachable body lining I! has attached a row of complementary hook fasteners 24 attached to a tape 25 which is also stitched almost around the entire armhole of the body lining with the exception of the small portion at the lowermost portion of the armhole. The detachable sleeve lining 2| may also be lined on the inside preferably with a smooth material 26 to permit easy access for the arm of a person, while the outer material of the sleeve lining 2! may be of a coarser material 21.

At the lowermost portion of the armhole of the detachable sleeve linings 2| there is an extended portion which serves as a shield member 28, so

' formed and. sufiiciently wide to protect the lowermost portions of the armholes of the body lining l1 and the lining of the outer garment 10. A button 29 is attached to the inside of the outer garment l0 slightly below the armhole to receive a vertical button hole 30 slightly below the lowermost portion of the .armhole of the body lining. An elongated vertical button hole 3| is provided at the lower portion and along the medial line of shield member 28 for attachment to button 29. The elongated vertical button holes 30 and 3| of the body lining and shield member respectively permits limited vertical movement both of the body lining and the shield member around the armhole in order to take up the movement of the material at the same time preventing bunching of the material at the armpits, thus permitting free movement to the arms of the person. In view of the fact that the metallic hook fasteners run around the armhole with the exception of the lowermost portion, an opening 32 is provided beneath the shield member 28 so that air may circulate beneath the armpits of the wearer.

The upper portion of body lining I1 may be lined with a smooth material 33 while the opposite upper portion'may have a warmer and rougher material 34, as shown in Fig. 1. Of course, both the materials 33 and 34 may run down to the bottom edge of body lining I 1, if so desired.

In a modified form, as shown in Fig. 5, the shield member 35 may be stitched to the detachable sleeve lining by stitching 36 so that if the shield member becomes Worn, it would be a comparatively simple matter to replace it with a new shield member. It is well known that one of the greatest points of wear of material is at the armpit. In certain types of garments such as sport coats, etc., it may be preferable to provide for greater elasticity and movement of the shield member. In that event, it would be preferable to make shield member 36 of a lastex material placed on the bias, thus providing greater stretchability of the shield member and also reducing the wear upon such shield member.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an outer garment, the combination of a sleeved coat, a body lining fitted within the coat, a detachable connection between the body lining and coat extending in a line over the shoulders and past the neck therebetween, complementary hook fasteners running almost entirely around the armholes of said body lining and said sleeve linings except at the lowermost portion, a shield member at the lowermost portion of said armhole sleeve lining, a button attached slightly below the lowermost portion of each armhole on the inside of said outer garment, an elongated vertical button hole slightly below the armhole of said body lining for attachment to said button, an elongated vertical button hole along the medial line of said shield member for attachment to said button.

2. In a detachable body lining for an outer arment, a detachable sleeve, metallic hook fasteners attached to a tape, said tape stitched to the armhole opening of said detachable sleeve member, said metallic hook fasteners extending slightly beyond the edge of the material of said detachable sleeve, complementary metallic hook fasteners attached to a tape, said tape stitched to the outside of said body lining, sufiiciently far from the edge so that the metallic hook fasteners are covered by the free edge of the armhole of said body lining, said complementary metallic slide fastener runnin almost entirely around the armhole except at the lowermost portion, means slightly below the lowermost portion of the armhole of said body lining for attaching said body lining to an outer garment, a shield member at the lowermost portion of said armhole of said detachable sleeve lining, means on said shield member for attaching said shield member to said body lining and said outer garment.

3. In a detachable body lining for an outer garment, a detachable sleeve, metallic hook fasteners attached to a tape, said tape stitched to the armhole opening of said detachable sleeve member, said metallic hook fasteners extending slightly beyond the edge of the material of said detachable sleeve, complementary metallic hook fasteners attached to a tape, said tape stitched to the outside of said body lining, sufiiciently far from the edge so that the metallic hook fasteners are covered by the free edge of the armhole of said body lining, said complementary metallic slide fastener running almost entirely around the armhole except at the lowermost portion, means slightly below the lowermost portion of the armhole of said body lining for attaching said body lining to an outer garment, an

elastic shield member attached at the lowermost portion of the armhole of said detachable sleeve lining, means on said shield member for attaching said shield member to said body lining and said outer garment.
