"Thisinventionrelates in general to garments and, more particularly,'to certain newimprovements in'theconstruction of patient gowns.

Itis a primary object of the present invention to provide ,a patient gownopenable'inthe back and with rear sectionslhaving overlappin tabs for garment-closing attachment at points on opposite sides of'the neck opening spacedly from the outer end of'theadjacent shoulder whereby asmooth surface is provided across .theback of thegarment, unbrokenby any discomfort-causing agents, such as'the snaps, seams,'buttons, and the like, disposed in the rear sections of currently used patient gowns.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide-'a patient "gown-having closure means which are readily accessible when the patient. is in *reclining position to ithereby minimize the ipatientstdiscomfort inumaking change ofgar- (ment; which, gown, while preserving themodesty 30f:the1pati'ent,, permits of ready exposur for exarnination\purposes; and which gownlis economically constructed for comfortable and durable wear.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a front view of a patient gown constructed in accordance with and embodying the present invention;

Figure 4 is a partial rear view of the gown showing the rear sections in full open position.

Referring now by reference characters to the figures which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the present invention, A designates a garment or gown of non-fitting character for use by hOspital patients. The garment A comprises broad, wrist-length sleeves l, 2, of the so-called raglan type and a body 3, having a front section 4, a pair of rear sections 5, 6, and a plain neck opening I. The front section 4 is preferabl designed for termination of its lower edge below the wearers knees, and is secured along its opposite lateral edges, as by side scams 8, 9, to the rear sections 5, 6, respectively, between its lower edge and the lower ends of arm holes a, b. 20, 2|, respectively, for overlapping relationship across the upper portion of the wearers back for detachable securement at their outer ends to the shoulder portions of the sleeves l, 2, respectively, adjacent the neck opening I, and spacedly from the outer edge of the adjacent shoulder, for maintaining the garment in wearing position. The upper edges of the tabs 20, 2i, are continuous with that of their associated rear sections 5, 6', respectively, so as to complete the definition of the neck opening I and to be in mutual registration when in overlapped position to present a neat appearance to said neck opening 1. Adjacent the outer end of the tab 20 and on the normally outer face thereof there is provided a button hole 22 for engagement therein of a button23 secured to the outward side of the shoulder portion of the sleeve 2, proximate the neck opening I. The tab 2|, which is designed to be overlapped by tab 20, is provided with a button 24 for engagement within and projection outwardly through a button hole 25, formed in the sleeve I in correspondin relation to the button 23. The

tab 20 is thus buttonable to the outside whereas the tab 2! is securable to the inside. It is, of

course, clearly obvious that other closure members, such as snap fasteners, could be utilized, if desired. The

20, 2|, are of such limited length as to terminate at the wearers shoulder when the garment is in worn position, and are of such restricted width as to present their outer margins in spaced relation to the outer end of the wearers shoulders.

Adjacent the neck opening I there are provided reinforcing, facing sections indicated 26, and the margins of the garment portions forming the neck opening i are bound, as by a tape binding 21, with all seams being reinforced for endowing the garment A with durability.

It will be seen that the closure means are positioned to allow the garment to extend smoothly across the wearers back whereby no discomfort will be occasioned when the wearer is in reclining position, such as by the closure means provided along the confronting portions of the rear sections of gowns heretofore generally used. The garment A is thus so uniquely constructed as to assure the patient maximum comfort and thereby conduce greatly to morale. The

23, 24, are presented at readily accessible points so that the unbuttoning and buttoning operation can be easily accomplished, even by the patient if capable, while the patient is reclining whereby a change of garment is attended with minimum disturbance.

It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the patient gown may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of the present invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A patients gown comprising a body having a front section and first and second rear sections, each of said rear sections having forward and 4 back lateral edges and being secured along their forward lateral edges to opposite side edges of the front section, said rear sections each having its back lateral edge free for forming an openable back, a pair of sleeves each being secured to the front section and to one rear section, the upper ends of said sleeves defining portions of a neck opening, first and second tabs secured to and projecting in opposite directions from the back lateral edge of said first and second rear sections respectively adjacent the upper end of the related rear section, the upper portion of one sleeve having a button hole adjacent the neck opening, the other sleeve having a button in corresponding relation to the button hole of the other sleeve, said first tab having a button adjacent its end and on its normally rearward face for engagement within the button hole of said one sleeve, said second tab having a button hole adjacent its end for engagement therein of the button on said other sleeve, whereby said second tab will overlie said first rear section and said first tab will underlie said second rear section when the same are in secured condition.

2. A patients gown as defined in claim 1 wherein the said first and second tabs are of restricted width whereby the normally outer margins thereof are spaced from the outer edge of the adjacent shoulder of the wearer and wherein the back lateral edges of each rear section define substantially vertical lines which are in substantially parallel relation when the garment is in worn position.
