GARMENT.
Speceaton of Letters Fatent.
lfatented Jan.. 13, 1914.
Application led June 6, 1313. Serial No. 772,117.
Be it known that I. HENRY FOLKAIAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to improvements in garments, and more particularly to an improved one piece dress designed primarily for use by school children, and formed with two overlapping front waist sections adapted to be arranged with either sectionon the outside, and capable of reversing without opening the skirt of the dress.
A further object is to provide in a dress of the character stated, an improved construction and arrangement of parts at the waistline which enables the front waist sections to be reversed and maintain a smooth and attractive waist. line in either position.
A further object is to provide an improved arrangement of ornamental collar with tabs thereon having snap button connection with the front waist sections, so that the appearance of the garment at the collar precisely the same in either position of the garment.
lilith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating my improved garment showingthe free end of the belt detached. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line QMQ of Fig. l. Fig. is a 'view in section on the line 3---3 of lFig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary7 view in section through the garment at the waist line showing the belt in its normal position. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. l. showing the waist front sections reversed and with a portion of the front broken out to illustrate parts beneath. Fig. 6 is a view similar to F l but showing the parts in their reversed position. Fig. 7 is a view in section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 8 is a view in section on the line SQS of Fig. 5.
My improved garment of the single piece type, but for clearness of description I shall give the waist portion the reference numeral l and the skirt portion the reference numeral 2, but it is to be understood that these parts are secured together, and while the garment is primarilyifor use by school children. I am of course no-t limited in this particular. At the juncture of the waist l and skirt Q, a belt 3 is attached by lines of stitching lwhich lines of stitching terminate short of one end of the belt which leaves this belt end 5 free, and is secured in normal position by snap button members 6.
The waist l of the garment is made with two overlapping front sections 7 and 8, the former having its free edge 9 constituting a. continuation of the edge l0 of one side of the open skirt 2, said skirt being normally held together by suitable fastening devices. I have shown snap buttons 1Q for the purpose. The front section S extends beyond the edge 13 of the skirt. and the lower portion of this front section S is covered by the belt end 5 when said section 8 is on the outside. The waist section S and the belt 3 are secured to the skirt portion 2 by the lines of stitching 4 hereinbefore referred to. and these lines of stitching terminate short of the edge 13 of the skirt. so that a projecting flap lil: is formed extending down the. length of the skirt. and forming an under-lying portion for the reception of the snap button members and to insure a perfect' closure of the skirt.
iVaistlY is provided around the neck opcning with a collar l5, the ends 1G and i7 of which being free from the garment. form tabs which are provided with snap button members 1S to engage snap button members 19 on sections 7 and 8 respectively to securely hold the sections in position. Other snap buttons 20 are provided on the free ends of both sections 7 and 8 so that these free ends may be secured on the inside of the Igarment as well as on the outside thereof. Section 8 is preferably provided with a series of pockets 2.1, so that. various articles such as pencils, erasers, etc.. may be carried` and as this garment is particularly adapted for use by school children, the pockets will be found a great convenience.
Along the edge f) of section snap button members Q2 are provided and engage snap button members 93 on section 8. and
as it is the intent-ion to have this section 7 on the outside when the child 1s going to and troni school, it ivill be of course desirable to have this outer section inore. ornanienta-l than the other section which is designed to be outern'iost when the child is in school, and vhich Will necessarily become soiled.
F ig. 1 shows the dress ivith the sections 7 on the outside. To place this section 7 0n the inside and position section S on the outside, the operation will be as follows: Snap buttons 1S are released and the ends 16 and 17 ot the collar 15 thrown backward. Snap button G is released to t'ree the end ot' the belt s, snap buttons Q2 are released to disengage the top ot' section 7 troni the dress,
and snap button 2O then released to disengage the tree end et section S. Section T may be then placed on the inside and section 8 on the outside. "he ends 16 and 1l' are then folded down and snap buttons 18 engaged. The snap button G is then engaged to position the beltI over the linver end ot section S, so that the dress will be held in this position When in school. ris above stated, the section S terminates at its lower end under the belt end, so that the sections may be readily placed inside or outside as the case inay be Without affecting the skirt portion ot' the dress. A reversal of this operation n'ill return the parts to toi-nier position, so that the child is ready tor her jonrney hoine. will therefore be noted that the sections T and nray be reversed Without opening the garment below the Waist., and that in either position, the belt end 5 Will lie sinooth at the Waist, and the ivaist of the garment as well as the skirt will be sinooth in either position of adjustment.
Yarious slight changes might be inade in the general torni and arrangement ot parts described Without departing troni niy invention, and hence l do not liuiitinyselt to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to niake such changes and alterations as fairlyv 'tall Within the spirit and. .scope ot the appended claiins.
Having thus described niy invention, what l claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. )t one piece gai-nient ot the character described, consisting ot a` ivaist and skirt having a belt at the juncture of the Waist and skirt, ivith one end et the belt free, said ,vaist having overlapping front sections, said liront sections adapted to be reversed when the loose belt end is detached, said belt end ivhen in norinal position covering the lov-rer portions of the Waist- 'ront sections, a collar Fixed tothe Waist extending part way around the ivaist at the neck and having a tab at its ends, and snap button ineinbers on said tabs and on said front sections locking the tabs to either ot the front sections which is outerinost, substantially as described.
2. A one piece garment ot the character described, consisting of a Waist vand skirt having' a belt at the juncture of the Waist and skirt, .vith one end of the belt free, said waist having overlapping front sections, said front sections adapted to be reversed when the loose belt end is detached, said belt end when in norinal position covering the loiver portions of the Waist front sections, and one oit said Waist front sections extending beyond its point of attaclnnent With the skirt at the iva-ist, a collar fixed to the ivaist extending part way around the Waist at the neck and having a tab at its ends, and snap button inenibers on said tabs and on said front sections locking the tabs to either ot' the front sect-ions which is outermost, substantially as described.
3. one. piece garnient ot' the character described, comprising a waist and skirt open throughout their length, av belt around the waist ot the Oarinent with one end tree, an extension on the skirt )ort-ion ot' the garinent having;v snap button inenibers thereon, other snap button ineuibers on the other edge ot the skirt adapted to engage said firstnent ioncd snap butt-on ineinbers, said Waist having two overlapping front sections, one trent section extended beyond the said llap of the skirt section, securing devices adapted to secure either of said tront sections outerinost.` and said tree end of the belt adapted to cover the loiver end of the said extended lront sections, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof l have signed iuy naine to thi. specilication in the presence ot mvo subscribing witnesses.
