Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1913.
Patented Feb. 24:, 1591.4.
Serial No. 765,973.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK F. KNo'ri-rn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Boxes or Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes or bags adapted to contain collars and analogous toilet articles, and has for its object to overcome the disadvantages usually present in collar boxes of this character with respect to the ready insertion of collars in the box and removal of the same from the box.
Heretofore, in collar boxes or bags of the class to which my invention pertains, as known to me, the upper or mouth portion of the flexible walls of the box cannot be expanded or opened out beyond the plane of the side walls, hence it is somewhat tedious to place the collars within or remove them from the box or bag.
In accordance with my invention I provide a box or bag of the character specified having its side walls divided in a vertical direction on opposite sides for a considerable distance downwardly from the marginal edge or mouth of the upper flexible walls thereof, whereby a plurality of readily foldable and separate upper wall parts of the box or bag are provided, enabling the same to be opened out wide and to be folded down outside of and around the main body portion of the box or bag, permitting ready access to the lower inner portion thereof for the insertion and removal of collars and other toilet articles. The running strings adjacent to the mouth of the box or bag are of sufficient length to enable the mouth portion of the box or bag to be opened out and folded down along the side walls thereof, without interference. In constructing my improved bag I also preferably provide main outer walls and an inner lining, between which walls and lining at the bottom of the bag is a stiffening disk or plate, and around the marginal portions thereof is a suitable stiffening band or ring retained in place and concealed by the lining, the separated parts of the upper flexible wall portions being above the upper edge of said ring, whereby the lower portion. of the box or bag is stiffened and the upper flexible wall portions are adapted to be drawn by the running strings over said ring when the box or bag is to be closed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
F igure 1 is a plan view of my improved collar box or bag; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the divided wall portions of the box or bag opened; Fig. 4.- is a side view showing the upper flexible wall portions folded outwardly down around the body portion, and Fig. 5 is a detail section of Fig. 3.
The box or bag illustrated may be made of any suitable material, such leather, having the bottom 1 and side walls 2, extending upwardly therefrom, in an annular or other suitable form, the bottom and side walls being secured together in any suitable manner, as by stitches 3. The walls 2 on opposite sides are divided or separated at 4, a suitable distance down from the upper edge or margin of the walls, as to the point 5, and suitable running strings 6 are threaded through holes in the walls 2 adjacent to the mouth of the box. This arrangement enables the upper portion of the flexible walls of the box to be drawn snugly together by the running strings, and the edges 2 adjacent to the divided portions t may lap over each other, as shown in Fig. 1, when the mouth of the bag is drawn closed by the run ning strings, and, furthermore, enables the upper portion 2* of the walls to be folded down over the body portion, as indicated in Fig. 4;. When the parts are in the latter position the lower body portion of the box or bag is opened wide to enable ready access to the interior of the same for insertion and removal of the collars, whereby the hand is not obliged to be pushed through the upper open mouth of the pocket, nor will the latter interfere with the insertion and removal of the collars, since the free edge of the flexible sides 2 is extended downwardly as in Fig. 4.
To stiffen the bottom of the box or bag a disk or plate 7 is placed upon the bottom 1, and at 8 is a stiffening band or ring extending all around within the walls 2. At 9 is a lining within the box or bag concealing the disk or plate 7 and band 8, the lower part 9 of the lining being shown stitched at 10 to the side walls of the lining, and the part 9 may be glued or cemented to the disk 7. The
upper part of the lining is stitched to the upper part of the walls 2 as at 11, and the running strings are shown located in the space between the lining and said walls, between the rows of stitching, being retained in place for free movement by said stitches, the stitches being thereby mainly concealed except where they pass through the openings 2 adjacent to the edges 2. The lining is shown stitched along the edges 2*, as at 12, and fastened by the stitches 5 to the outer walls, slightly above the band 2, whereby the lining is securely attached to the separated portions of said walls retaining the lining in proper position when in use.
My invention enables the manufacture of boxes and bags of the character described in a cheap manner, since the side walls may be made from relatively small pieces of material, as the two side portions may be joined along the lines 2 on opposite sides beneath the divided portions 4, although, of course, the side portions 2 of the bag may be in a single piece, and the box or bag afiords increased convenience to the user.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. A box or bag of the character described comprising a bottom and flexible side walls, a stiffening plate at the bottom within the box or bag, a band within the box or bag extending around said walls at the lower portion thereof, a lining within the box or bag having sides and a bottom portion concealing said plate and band, the upper portion of the lining being secured to the upper portion of the flexible side walls, the upper portion of said side walls and lining being divided from the outer edge thereof clownwardly to permit the portion of the walls above said band to fold downwardly and along the latter, said lining being stitched to said walls along said divided portion, and means to retain the mouth of the bag closed.
2. A box or bag of the character described comprising a bottom and flexible side walls, a stiffening plate at the bottom within the box or bag, a band within the box or bag extending around said walls at the lower portion thereof, a lining within the box or bag having sides and a bottom portion concealing said plate and band, the upper-portion of the lining being secured to the upper portion of the flexible side walls, the upper portion of said side walls and lining being divided from the outer edge thereof downwardly to permit the portion of the walls above said band to fold downwardly and along the latter, said lining being stitched to said walls along said divide-d portion, and running strings passing through openings in the outer wall adjacent to said divided portions and being located between said walls and lining, and stitches securing said walls and lining together and retaining said run ning strings in position.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 5th day of May, A. D. 1913.
