Description

Dec. 20, 1938. l M. A. HAMMERMAN GARMENT Filed May 2, 1958 Patented Dec. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Meyer A. Hammerman, Chicago, lll.
Application May 2, 1938, Serial No. 205,432 v (ci. a-im 12 Claims.
My invention relates to garments, particularly infants garments which are in the general form of blankets or bedA covers 'or the like, although the novel features of my invention, as will be seen hereinafter, may be embodied in that type of garment which completely encircles an infant and is closed at the bottom, in other words the so-called sleeping bags.
Infants garments of numerous types have been disclosed in the prior art for the purpOse of providing'comfort, warmth and bodily protection and at the same time designed to permit freedom of movement of the infant and avoidance of danger of strangulation. While many of these garments possess certain desirable features, they also are lacking in important matters such as simplicity of construction, cost of manufacture, ease of providing ingress into and egress from the garments and the like.
I have provided a novel garment which avoids various objections to prior art garments, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and affords comfort, Warmth and protection and relative freedom of movement by the infant without danger of strangulation or the like.
In general, my novel garmentcomprises a body or blanket portion, preferably made of a single thickness of a suitable fabric material such as cotton, wool, flannel, or the like, although it will be apparent that, if desired, the body or blanket portion may be made of a plurality of thicknesses of material. The body or blanket portion is associated in a novel manner, as hereinafter pointed out in detail, with a vest or jacket portion which is mounted on the back or rear sur-- face of the body or blanket portion. The body cr blanket portion is provided, preferably, a1-
though not necessarily, medially or centrally of the width thereof, with an opening or slit which is adapted to be closed by a slide or separable fastener or any other desired fastening or closing means. Preferably, the opening or slit terminates at a point spaced from the bottom of the body or blanket portion and the slide fastener or other closingmeans preferably terminates at a point below the top or upper edge of said body or blanket portion whereby two free corners are left.
The vest or jacket is open at the front thereby providing two front sections, as is the case with conventional vests and jackets. However, the edges of the vest or jacket sections are attached in any suitable manner, as by stitching or the like, to the opposite edges of the opening in the body or blanket portion. The result is that by closing theslide fastener or the like, the `opening in the body or blanket portion is closed and simultaneously therewith the vest or jacket is closed. The vest or Jacket portion is also preferably connected to the back side or rear surface of the body or blanket portion at a plurality of 5 places in the upper and lower parts of said vest or jacket portion, as will appear more clearly hereinafter.
Other featuresrof my invention will be clear from aconsideration of the accompanying draw- 10 ing illustrating one embodiment of my invention wherein Figure 1 is a front view of a garment, in the form of a blanket, made in accordance with my invention, the vest or acket portion being shown is in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a back view of the garment of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view, partly broken away, taken generally along the line 3-3 of Fig-I 20 ure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, the vest or jacket portion being somewhat expanded to show 'more clearly the construction, one cuff of the jacket being `shown in unbuttoned form to show fully the arrangement of the parts thereof. 25
As shown in said drawings, the garment of my invention comprises a body or blanket portion I0 of suitable fabric material, preferably generally rectangular in shape as disclosed, and provided with a generally central or medial opening or slit 30 which serves to divide said body or blanket portion into two side flaps or sections II and I2. The slit or opening is adapted to be closed by suitable means, preferably a slide or hookless fastener I3 which may be manipulated by a finger 35 piece Il. As is clearly shown inthe drawings, the slit or opening does not extend to the bottom of the blanket portion but terminates at a point I6. The slide fastener also does not extend to the top of the blanket portion but terminates at 40 a short distance therebelow, leaving two free corner flaps I1 and I8 which. in part, define the neck portion of a vest or J'ackety portion later to be described.
On the rear surface or back side of the blanket 45 portion, at the upper end thereof, there is mounted a vest or jacket portionr I9 for .an infant. 'I'his vest or jacket portion which, as shown, lies `essentially entirely within the area of the blanket portion, comprises a back 2|, a front 22 50 which comprises two sections 23 and 2l, and sleeves 26 and 2l. 'Ihe vest or jacket portion I9 is attached to the back of the blanket'portion in a novel manner, as best shown in Figure 3. The interlockable fastening members which comsaid stitches 32, as previously stated, serves to attach a free edge of the jacket portion to the blanket portion. The other row of stitches 34 serves to attach the tape 29 adjacent the edge of the opening. The manner of attaching the tape 28 along the edge of the section 23 is the same as described with respect to the tape 29. It will be seen, therefore, that, by opening the slide fastener I3, the jacket portion is simultaneously opened, and by closing said slide fastener the jacket portion is simultaneously closed.
The jacket portion is also preferably connected to the back ofthe blanket portion at a plurality of places at the upper and lower parts of the jacket portion. In the drawings, the lower part of the jacket is stitched to the blanket portion at points 36 and 3'I and the upper part is stitched at the points 38 and 39.
The jacket sleeves 26 and 21 are each provided with a double cuif,` as best shown in Figure 3, comprising a cuff 4I which is provided with a male snap member 42 which cooperates with a female snap member 43 on the sleeve. Buttonholes 44 are provided in the cuff and, when the cu is folded back, buttons 46 on the sleeve pass therethrough.- 'I'he buttons and snap fastener serve to hold the cuil' in folded relation.
The blanket is provided with decorative binding or trimming ribbon 41 which is sewn in place, said binding or trimming which is adjacent the slit or opening in the blanket serving to conceal the slide fastener. Ribbons 48 are provided at the free corners I1 and I8 and may be tied into a bow or decorative knot while closing the neck portion of the blanket more closely about the neck of an infant, if desired. 'Ile strings 49 serve as a means to secure the blanket to bed posts or the like.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided a novel and inexpensive garment which may be utilized with great convenience. While I have illustrated my invention in connection with a blanket, which represents the most important embodiment, the novel teachings of my invention may be embodied in garments of the sleeping bag type which comprise a closed bottom bag which completely encircles: an infant.
It will be understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. My invention is, therefor, not to be limited other than by the scope of the claims.
