Au /i ALEXANDER WARSHAUER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOUBLE-BREASTED GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
Application filed July 18, 1917. Serial No. 181,233.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WARS- I-IAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double-Breasted Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments for the protection of the chest, abdomen, sides, and back, of the wearers body, and relates particularly to garments adapted to be worn under an ordinary coat as an auxiliary body protector, adapted to afford extra protection for the chest and abdomen.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a plan View of a garment embodying the invention, in a flat condition.
Fig. 2 is a front View showing the garment adjusted for use.
Fig. 3 is a back View of the adjusted garment.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a slightly different adjustment.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to a portion of Fig. 1, showing a modification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
As shown by the drawings, my improved garment is adapted to encircle the wearers body, and comprises av central portion formed to cover the wearers back and preferably composed of two sections 12 and 13 united by a seam 14, and two end portions each formed to cover the chest and abdomen, one of said portions being preferably composed of sections 15 and 1G united by a scam 17, while the other end portion is composed of sections 18 and 19, united by a seam 20. One of the said end portions is united to the central portion by a seam 21, and the other end portion is united to the central portion by a seam 2'2.
Arm openings 23 are provided at the upper portion of the garment, said openings being arranged to receive the wearers arms, and preferably located on the seams 21, 22, as best shown by Fig. 1 Although the garment shown by Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, is sleeveless like a vest or waistcoat, it is obvious that sleeves may be attached at the arm openings, as indicated by Fig. 5, which shows a portion of the garment and a sleeve 24 attached thereto at one of the arm openings 23. The garment is provided, at the extremities of the end portions, with oppositely extending straps 25 and 26, which are preferably integral respectively with the sections 16 and 19, said straps being adapted to meet and be adj ustably and detachably connected behind the wearers back. As here shown, the strap 25 is provided with a pronged buckle 27 adapted to engage the strap 26, as indicated by Fig. 3.
The garment is provided at one side with a slit 28, preferably located on the seam 22, below one of the arm openings, and arranged to receive the strap 25, and permit said strap to pass from the interior to the exterior of the garment.
In putting on the garment the wearer insorts his arms in the openings 23. passes the strap 25 through the slit 28, and then connects the straps 25 and 26 behind his back, exerting a sutlicient pull on the straps to gather or pucker the back portion, as indicated by Fig. 3. The pull exerted on the straps pulls the end portions of the garment in opposite directions over the chest and abdomen, thus causing said portions to lie smoothly and confining them securely with one end portion overlapping the other, so that neither portion can he accidentally dis placed. The two end portions are therefore maintained in position to constitute a double cover for the chest and abdomen.
One of the end portions may be provided near the upper edge of the garment with supplemental fastening devices such as buttons 29 and 30, and the other end portion with complemental devices such as buttonholes 31 and 32, these being arranged to cooperate as indicated by Fig. 2, in detachably' connecting the two end portions over the chest of the wearer. It is obvious that suitable snap or stud-aud-sockct fasteners may be substituted for the said buttons and button-holes. If the wearer desires to provide a larger or deeper neck opening exposing his neck-tie he may fold or turn in the upper corners of the end portions as shown by Fig. 4, the garment thus adjusted being sutlioiently confined by the straps for all practical purposes. Said upper corners are formed by parts of the upper edges and parts of the vertical edges of the end portions. When these corners are extended and secured, as shown by Fi 2, the neck opening is contracted. When the corn ers are turned or folded inwardly, the folds thus formed constitute the-edges of a \/-'-shaped' extension of the neck opening, as shown by Fig. 4:, said opening being "therefore enlarged. The straps 25 and 26 are below said corners,'"and'"therefore 'permit inward foldin;;' of the corners.
Iclaim:
AfCl'Ollble breasted garment'of the character described comprising a middle portion formedtor-eover'the back, duplicate end portions. constituting a double :breast and abdomen cover, and "terminating in strap-1i ke xrfenibergeach end portion being attached of saidseamsalso*having-an-opening to per mit passage of the strap-like member of the endportion attached to the central portion by the other seam, means for adjustablyicone necting 'sa'id strap-like members, "each end portionabfeingrofsatsize to reach nearly to the inner edge of the other end portion and having an upper corn'errcapableoflbeing folded in, and meanskf'or detaehably c'onnecting 'said upper corners Jan'di ithe body of the garment.
