Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 17, 1911.

Serial No. 633,838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK T. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Vests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a vest which may be worn, in connection with a frock coat or a sack coat in the usual manner, but which, when desired, may be converted into a low-cut vest suitable to be worn with a Tuxedo or ,dress coat, for evening wear. To this end the front portions of the improved vest are formed in two parts which are divided horizontally, or approximately so, and are detachably secured together, so that when it is desired to convert the vest into a low-cut vest for evening wear the top portions of the front of the vest may be detached from the bottom portions thereof and turned inward and detachably secured in such inturned positions, leaving the lower portions to be buttoned around the wearer as usual.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front view of the improved vest with one side thereof adjusted for day wear and the other side adjusted for evening wear. Fig. 2 is an inside view of one side of the vest adjusted for evening wear.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the body of the improved vest the front portions of which are divided into upper and lower sections 13 and 14, one side of the vest being as usual provided with buttons and the other with buttonholes. For ordinary or day wear the adjacent edges of the sections 13 and 14 are detachably secured together, preferably by a series of ball-and-socket or snap fasteners 15, although this detachable attachment of these parts may be otherwise effected, as by hooks and eyes. When using ball-and-socket or snap fasteners the upper sections 13 will preferably be provided with downward extensions 16 supporting the ball portions of the fasteners, and the socket portions of the fasteners will be attached to the inner faces of the lower sections 14 which overlap said extensions. In employing hooks and eyes for this detachable attachment the hooks will preferably be attached to the inner sides of the lower sections 14:, and the eyes to the inner sides of the upper sections 13, or to the extensions 16.
By reference to the drawing it will be seen that the proximate edges of the sections 13 and 14, aside from the flaps or extensions 16, are substantially in the same line, and that as the flaps or extensions 16 are on the upper sections 13 said upper sections may be turned in or folded under so as to be concealed by the body of the vest when the parts are adjusted for evening wear.
When the upper sections 13 are folded under, to form a dress or low-cut vest, they will preferably be secured in such inturned positions by ball-and-socket or snap fasteners 17 located near their top and bottom portions and secured to the adjacent inturned faces of the sections 13 and the parts of the body of the vest against which they are folded.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The herein described improved vest having its front portions divided, in a line transverse to the front edges of the garment, into upper and lower front sections 13 and 14. the adjacent edges of which sections are approximately in the same plane, so that said upper sections 13 may be folded within the body of the vest, combined with means for detachably securing the adjacent transverse edges of said sections together; whereby the vest is adapted to be worn either as a day vest when the said transverse edges of said front sections are secured together, or as a low-cut evening vest when the upper sections are detached from the lower sections and turned inward against the body of the vest.
2. The herein described improved vest having its front portions divided, in a line transverse to the front edges of the garment, into upper and lower front sections 13 and 141- the adjacent edges of which are approximately in the same plane, combined with means for detachably securing the adjacent transverse edges of said sections together, whereby the vest is adapted to be worn either as a day vest when the edges of said front sections are secured together, or as a low-cut evening vest when the upper sections are detached from the lower sections and turned inward against the body of the vest; said upper sections being provided with downward extensions slightly overlapped by said lower sections, and the detachable attaching means being located on the said overlapping parts.
3. The herein described improved vest having its front portions divided, in a line transverse to the front edges of the gar- .ment, into upperand lower front sections 13 and 14 the adjacent edges of which are approximately in thesame plane, combined with means for detachably securing the adjacent transverse edges of said sections together; whereby the vest is adapted to be worn either as a day vest when the edges of said front sections are secured together, or as a low-cut evening vest when the upper sections are detached from the lower sec- FRANK T.
