BERNHARD RAUTENBERG, 0F NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK.
SWEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 8, 1910.
Serial No. 570,961.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD RAUTEN- BERG, a citizen of Canada, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sweaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sweaters.
Its object is the production of a comparatively inexpensive combination garment of this kind which can be used either as an ordinary sweater with the usual V-shaped front opening at the neck, or as an automobile sweater with a collar and a closed front to protect the wearer in cold or lwindy weather, thus obviating the necessity of purchasing two separate sweaters of different styles.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the garment in the form of an ordinary buttoned sweater. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof in the form of a buttoned automobile sweater. Fig. 3 is a front view of the garment showing the collar turned down in the form of a sailor-collar- Fig. 1 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, showing the shield-eXtensions unbut-toned and the front portion of the garment turned back to expose the extensions. Fig. 5 is an inside view of the back of the garment showing the collar turned in. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 6-6, Fig. 5.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The garment has the usual V-shaped front or neckopening A characteristic of the ordinary collarless sweater, and is preferably provided with the customary marginal band b.
Attached to the inner side of the garment is a reversible collar C adapted to be turned under the back and shoulders thereof when the garment is to be used as an ordinary open front sweater, as shown in Fig. 1, or to be turned out and folded to the position shown in Fig. 2, when the garment is to be used as an automobile sweater; or it may be folded down to the position shown in Fig. 3 to obtain a sailor-eifect.
The collar is preferably attached to the lower edge of the neck band, by stitching or otherwise, asbest shown, in Fig. 5, so that when the collar is turned in, it is completely concealed, giving the garment the appearance of an ordinary V-neck sweater.
The inner fold of the collar or that portion underlying the neck band b is provided fasteners are shown in the drawings, but ifV desired, buttons and button holes or other appropriate fastenings may be substituted therefor.
In the preferred form of the garment herein shown, the shield-extensions D are detached from the body of the garment to avoid stretching or drawing of the front of the sweater when the shields are buttoned. The extensions are preferably knit integral with the collar. When the collar is turned in, it serves as a lining for the back and shoulders of the sweater, effectually protecting the wearers lungs.
In the automobile form of the sweater, the collar may be turned up to protect the ears pf the wearer, as shown by dotted lines in 41ig. 2. This improved garment, while readily convertible into the two styles of sweaters mentioned, can be produced 'at practically the same cost as an ordinary automobile sweater, thus saving the purchaser the cost of a separate, ordinary sweater.
I claim as my invention:
l. A combination sweater having a V- shaped neck opening and a reversible collar capable of being turned under the body of the garment when not in use and of being doubled over the face of the garment when in use, the inner fold of the collar terminating at its front ends in shield-extensions formed integral therewith and arranged to meet and close said neck opening when the collar is turned. out to form an automobile sweater.
2. A combination sweater, having a V- shaped neck opening and a reversible collar capable of being turned under the body of the garment when not in use and of being Patented May 2, 1911.
doubled over the face of the garment when Witness my hand this 2d day of July, in use, the inner fold of the Collar terminat- 1910. ing at its front ends in shie1d-eXtensi0ns| formed integral therewith and arranged to Ineet and close said neck-opening when the W tnesses: collar is turned out, Said shields being de i C. F. GEYER,
taehed from the body of the garment. l E. M. GRAHAM.
BERNHARD RAUTENBERG.
