To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE DEMACAKOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county this specification: Figure his a view showing the coat and vest of my invention and also' showing the front portions of the vest as inclosed and hidden from view in the front portions of the coat; the vest being illustratcd with its back removed. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the front portions of the vest as removed from the front and side portions of the coat. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical section illustrative of the manner in which the front'and side portions of the vest are detachably secured in the front and side portions of the coat. Fig.4 is a side elevation illustrating one front and side portion ofthe coat and the corresponding vest portion arranged in and hidden by the coat portion. A is the coat of my improvements. In general the said coat is of the ordinary well known construction, but it is peculiar in that it is provided at the inner sides of its side and front portions a with receptacles b designed to contain and hide the side and front portions of the vest after the manner shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4 The mouths of the said receptacles I) extend from about the middles of the arm pits c of the coat portions 11 to a point d adjacent to the lower ends of said portions a; and in the preferred embodiment of my invention the said receptacles are formed by pieces of lining e which are stitched, as indicated by f, along their edges to the inner sides of the portions a except between the mentioned points 0 and (1. Thus it will be apparent that the receptacles e are provided, with mouths extending from the points 0 to the points d, while the inner sides of the portions a present the appearance of neatly lined coat portions. At their inner sides and at points adjacent to the mouths of the receptacles b, the pieces of lining e are provided with fastener members 9 designed to cooperate with complementary fastener members on the vest portions in detachably securing the latter in the receptacles b.

B is the vest of my improvements. This vest is made up of side and front portions h, a yoke 'i connecting in a permanent manner the upper ends of said portions h, back straps j connected to the portions 72 and designed to be dctachably connected together through the medium of a buckle k or other suitable meana and a removable back I; the latter being designed for .use only when the weather is cold and it is desirable to provide an extra thickness of cloth at the back of the person wearing my novel coat and vest. The yoke i of the vest is provided at its forward side with a buttonhole m for the engagement of a button 11. at the back of the upper portion of the backl; and it is also provided at points adjacent to the portions 6 and on its forward side with fastener members p designed to cooperate with fastener members 1' on the back 1 in detachably connecting the back I to the yoke 1'. At opposite sides of its lower portion the removable back Z is provided with straps s, one of which is provided with a buckle t,

whereby the straps may be fastened together in front of the stomach of the wearer with a view of holding the back lv close against the back of the wearer.

By virtue of the construction described it will be apparent that when the Weather is warm and it is desirable to have the garment as a whole thin and cool at the back, the back I may be detached from the yoke i and entirely removed from the garment; and it will also be appreciated that when the weather conditions are such that an additional thickness of cloth is desirable at the back of the wearer, the back I may be expeditiously and easily attached to the yoke t, and the straps s may be as readily fastened about the body of the wearer'to retain the lower portion of the back I snug against the wearer.

When the back I is removed from the remainder of the vest, the vest may be worn in the usual way, as

shown in Fig. 2, or else the side and front portions h of the vest may be positioned in the receptacles b of the coat portions a and entirely hidden by the inner walls e of said receptacles, after the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. When the vest portions h are placedin the receptacles b as stated, the fastener members 9 of the pieces of lining e are engaged with the fastener members it on the inner sides of thevest portions h. Because of this latter provision it will be readily observed that the vest portions h are held in a neat and smooth manner in the receptacles b, with the result that the vcoat presents the same finished appearance as a' neatly lined coat of ordinary construction worn without a vest. It will also be gathered that because of thevest having but the yoke i and the straps j at the back, it adds but little to the weight of the combined garment and does not render the coat any warmer at the back than an ordinary coat worn without a vest.

When the combined garment is in use and it is desired for any reason to display the vest, the vest portions h are detached from the linings e and removed from the receptacles b, and positioned and fastenedjn front of the body in the ordinary manner, when, as will be readily apparent and as shown in Fig. 2, the combined garment will present the same finished appearance as a neatly fitting coat and vest of the ordinary construction. Then it the weather conditions are such that it is desirable to use the back I, the said back may be attached to the yoke i, and its straps s may be passed between the vest portions h and the body of the wearer, and may be fastened through the buckle t in front of the body of the wearer but under the side and front portions h which will entirely hide them from view.

in virtue of the construction. described, it will be observed that the vest of my improvements, with the exception of the back 1 is carried by the coat and in a neatly arranged manner when the vest is not in use; and it will also be noted that the back Z of the vest is susceptible of being compactly folded and carried in one, of the pockets of the coat.

In addition to the practical advantages herein ascribed to my improvements, it will he noted that the said improvements are no more expensive than an ordinary coat and vest of corresponding quality, and that the said improvements are quite as durable as an ordinary coat and vest.

The construction herein shown and described constitutes the best embodiment of my invention of which .claims appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

. 1. A vest comprising side and front portions having fastener members on their inner sides, a yoke permanently connecting the upper ends of said side and front portions and provided at its forward side with fastener members, back straps connected to the lower ends of the side and front portions and equipped to be adjustably connected together, and a detachable back having fastener members adjacent to its upper end for coiiperating with the fastener members of the yoke and also having straps on its lower portion provided with means whereby they may be adjustably connected in front of the body, in combination with a coat having side and front portions and also having receptacles at the inner sides of said side and front portions; the said receptacles being formed by linings which are stitched to side and front portions except between points at the rear edges of the lining, and the said linings being provided on their inner sides with fastener members arranged to coiiperate with the complementary members of the vest portions.

2. A vest for'the purpose described made up of side and front portions, a yoke extending between and permanently connecting the upper ends of said side and front portions and provided at its forward side with fastener members, back straps connected to the lower ends of the side and front portions and equipped to be adjustahly connected together, and a detachable back having fastening members adjacent to its upper end for coiiperating with the fastener members of the yoke and also having straps on its lower portion provided With means whereby they may be adjustably connected in front of the body.
