SHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,979, dated June 22, 1897.

Application filed January 21, 1897. Serial No. 620,082. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENNETT BERENSTEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved shirt constructed to insure durability and strength, especially in the sleeve portions, and to form a'lining to render the shirt very comfortable and warm.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out inthe claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indishirt.

The improved shirt is provided with a body A, made from a single piece of fabric, as shown in Fig. 3, the said shirt being provided with a second part B, likewise made from a single piece of fabric, as shown in Fig. 4:, and combining the sleeves B B the shoulders B the front or bosom B and aportion of the back B The body A has its middle portion A fitted on the inside of the bosom B the shoulders B and the back B so as to form a lining for the same, the lower edges of the bosom B and the back B being secured by stitches C to the body A to attach the parts together. The dependent parts A and A of the body A form the usual lower portion of the shirtbody, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The sides of the lining part A of the body are connected by rows of stitches D D to the part B at or near the junction of the sleeves B B with the shoulder B The collar E is secured in the usual manner with its neckband to the shoulder parts B and a corresponding portion of the lining A.

Now it is evident that by the arrangement described the body A forms a lining for the breast B, the shoulder parts B and the back 13 so that a continuous piece of fabric is on the inside of the shirt at the parts enumerated, and a continuous piece of fabric extends across the shirt from the end of one sleeve to the end of the other.

By the arrangement described the continuous fabric for the sleeve and shoulder part-s renders seams at the junction of the same unnecessary, and as the most strain on the shirt is at this point it is evident that the shirt as constructed and above described is rendered very strong and durable and is not liable to break at the junction of the sleeve and shoulder parts.

If desired, the part B may be made in two equal portions, the division being at a line B as indicated in Fig. 4, the two parts being sewed together at this point in the usual manner.

It will be seen that the improved shirt has a double bosom, since the transverse piece B extends across the upper part of the longitudinal or vertical body A. It will be particularly observed that the lower edge of said transverse piece is in line with and partly below the junction of the sleeve with the body. The seam 0 therefore takes most of the strain and very little strain comes on the seams D D. The upper portion A of the body is fully covered by the middle or bosom portion B of the transverse piece, as both the body and the transverse piece extend up to the neck.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A shirt, comprising a body having a neck opening and armholes, and a combined bosom, reinforce, and sleeve-piece arranged upon the outer surface of the body with its ends proj ecting beyond the armholes thereof and forming sleeves, the central portion of the said piece extending over the shoulder of the body and down the back and front of the same and secured thereto adjacent to the armholes and at its lower front and rear edges, said central portion forminga bosom and reinforce for the back and shoulders of the shirt, substantially as herein shown and described.
