Description
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH A. SORIVEN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters Patent No. 590,595, dated September 28, 1897'.
Application filed March 25, 1897- Serial No. 629,205.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH A. ScRIvEN, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of
an elastic insertion.
To this end my invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a pair of-drawers containing my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front View of the exterior of the crotch portion. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the interior of thecrotch portion, and Fig. at is a section on line at 4. of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents the rear sections of the body of the garment, and A the front sections thereof. These sections are usually made of comparatively inelastic woven material. Bis an elastic insertion interposed between the said rear sections of the body of the garment. C is an elastic insertion interposed between the front and'rear sections of the body of the garment, the said strips B and 0 meeting in the crotch ofv the garment. The insertion b is shown as an elastic gusset forming part of the insertion B and overlapping the insertion C, as will clearly appear from an inspection of Fig. 3, and does not have its longitudinal edges an attached to the said insertion C, butis transversely connected thereto by rows of stitches 01 along the. edges of C. This elastic insertion or gusset 12 extends upward from the middle of the crotch E of the garment into the front thereof and forms the connection between the front garment-sections A, the upper free edge f of the said gusset or insertion Z) forming the lower edge of the front opening or placket F of the drawers. This front opening is shown as bounded by the edges D, which are shown as extending beyond the front sections AiA on to the insertion Z) and stitched thereto by rows of stitches e c. The insertion b is shown in the present instance as a separate piece exfrom an inspection with inelastic sections of (No model.)
tending from the with the insertion B if desired.
In order to add strength to the elastic insertion b, it may return upon itself and be sewed to the front edge of the section 0 by the row of stitches d. This will clearly appear be observed that the elastic insertion Z2 is shown as sewed to the section or insertion B by the row of stitches cl, crosses the elastic section or insertion O, and is secured to the said section at its front edge by the row of stitches d, thence extends upward between the sections A A into the front of the crotch,
and thence returns upon itselfto the front edge of the elastic sectionC, to which it is secured by the row of stitches d. The insertion b takes up and equalizes the strains at the lower edge of the front opening of the garment and at the front of the upper portion of insertion B, but iti's quite obvious that this insertion b may be integral of Fig. 4, wherein it-will the garment, so that instead ofhaving an inat these places I have prostructure which will yield to elastic structure vided an elastic the motions of the body and conduce to comfort and to the durability of the garment.
I would have it understood that where I refer to portions of the garment as inelastic I do not mean to thereby limit myself absolutely to inelastic material, but wish to be understood as setting forth and claiming material less'elastic than the elastic portions of the garment. I
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. 'In'a pair ofdrawers, the combination an elastic insertion B interposed between two of the. sections and located in the crotch of the garment and having a gusset Z) extendingupward from the crotch of the said garmenttothe front opening or placket F of the said garment, the upper edge of the said insertion forming the lower edge of the said front opening and lower ends lap sertions 1; (1 meeting at an angle and overthe front opening of the garment and secured lapping each other in the crotch of the garthereto and forming the lower edge thereof, ment, the edges a a of the overlappingportion substantially as described. of seet-ionB being disconnected from the over- JEREMIA'I l' A. SCRIVEJ.
5 lapped portion 0, an elastic insertion or gus- I \Vitnesses:
set 1) extending upward from the middle of Y GEO. E. MORSE, the crotch of the garment to the lower part of HARRY M. TURK.
