Be it known that I, OTTO W. SCHAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle or Golf Trousers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to bicycle or golf trousers, and it has reference particularly to such construction of garment of this nature as will give to the usual cuff portions thereof the appearance of the top or rolled portions of golf-stockings usually worn with such trousers and will at the same time serve the purpose of a garter for sustaining the stocking.

My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein the numerals of reference indicate the parts correspondingly referred to in this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents my improved form of golf or bicycle trousers. 'Fig. 2 is a view of the lower part of the leg of the trousers as shown in Fig. 1, one corner of the outer one of the two layers of which the cuff is formed being turned back to show the fastenings thereof. showing one end of the cuff turned back at the slit therein; and Fig. i is a view also similar to Fig. 2, showing the manner of securing the cuff to the trousers-leg.

In said drawings the numeral 1 indicates one of the legs proper of the trousers, and 2 indicates the cuff thereof, attached to a band or collar 3 at the bottom of each of the trousers-legs. The end 2 consists of a strip of elastic webbing attached, as hereinafter described, along one edge to the band or collar 3, which is stitched to the bottom of each trousers-leg and having its meeting ends secured together my means of two-membered clasps or fasteners 4c of the well-known construction shown in the drawings, the female member of said clasps or fasteners being secured to the overlapping ends of the cuff.

that when the outer layer is stitched in place the back of this member of each clasp or fastener is hidden from View. The two layers are stitched together along their edges. The outer layer is somewhat longer than the inner or elastic one, and the two layers are so secured that a transversely gathered or wrinkled eifect is produced in the outer or non-elastic layer. In other words, in the outer layer there is a slight superfluity of material, and the two layers are so secured together that when the cuif is not in position on the leg of the wearer the outer layer is'more or less wrinkled, but when the said end is in position the elastic layer is distended and the outer layer drawn into its normal shape.

Of course the outer layer of the material should approximately fit the leg of the wearer, and if it does so the elasticity of the inner layer will be free to act without unduly and appreciably causing the wrinkling in the outer layer when the cuff is in position.

Of course, if desired, buttons and buttonholes may be substituted for the clasps and fasteners hereinbefore described, and then the cuff may, with reference to the outer layer, be adjusted to fit the leg of the wearer as desired by moving the buttons.

As shown in Fig. 4, the cuif is secured to the band 3 at the bottom of the trousers-leg by means of fasteners 8, similar to those already described, the male members of said fasteners being secured to said band and the female members to the cuif.

By providing means for detachably securing the cuff to the bottom of the trousers a set ofcuffs of different patterns may be kept by the wearer and any one of them may be used by simply removing the cuif already in place and substituting the one desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a pair of bicycle or golf trousers having bands at the bottom of the legs, of a combined leg-cud and stockingsupport adapted to be secured to each of said bands over the stocking and composed of an inner layer of elastic material and an outer layer of non-elastic material, the non-elastic layer having greater longitudinal dimension than the elastic layer and said layers being stitched together at their edges to produce a transverse gathering or wrinkling in the nonelastic layer, and devices for securing said cufis to the bands and for securing the ends of said cuffs together, substantially as described.
