SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,408, dated February 22, 1898. Application filed May 28,1895. Renewed J l 24,1897. Serial No. 645,851- (N0 model-l T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, INGLIS M. UPPERCU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Bathing, Athletic, or other Suits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in bathing, athletic, and other suits, and has for its objects, first, to provide such an article of one piece of material to form both the shirt and trunks; second, to provide a suit such as described which can be secured without the use of buttons, which are a source of great annoyance, especially on the front of bathing-suits; third, to provide a suit which when on the body will prove extremely comfort-able and look modest.

For a full understanding of my invention reference is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is front View of my suit as it would look hanging up and spread out. Fig. 2 is a back view of a man and of the suit tied in position on the body.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding; parts throughout the two views.

The shirt or body 1 of the suit is preferably made integral, in which case it is put on the same as an ordinary undershirt, but it is obvious that it may be open in the front or back and secured by buttons or otherwise. The

downwardly-extending skirt 2 is preferably made integral with the back of the shirt 1, and is contracted just below its joining line with the shirt and enlarged at its lower portion, as shown, so as to nearly or partially surround the waist or body of the wearer, and to its lower edge or corners 3 are secured suitable tapes or strings 4. After the shirt is in position on the body the lower part of the suit or skirt is brought to the front between the legs and secured up around the waist by the strings 4:, which are tied at the back. The lower front portion of the shirt is provided or formed with a breech-cloth 5, which extends downward and is contracted to a width slightly narrower than that of the skirt 2. This breech-cloth when in use is brought backward under and between the legs of the wearer and serves as a supporter, as well as aiding in holding the front portion of the shirt down, whereby that objectionable feature of the front part of the shirt working up is entirely overcome.

Having fully described the construction and manner of using my improved suit and set forth its leading advantages and modifications, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bathing, athletic or other suit composed of a shirt having a skirt depending from the back portion thereof, said skirt being contracted at a point slightly below its joining line with the shirt and enlarged or broadened at its lower end, a contracted breech-cloth of less width than the skirt depending from the front portion of the shirt and adapted to be brought backward between the legs of the wearer, and fastening cords or tapes secured to the lower edges of the depending skirt and adapted to be passed around the waist of the wearer, substantially as described.
