Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE..
MYRON H. CHAIIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN wAlsT-BEL-rs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,133., dated October 20, 1874; application filed i September 10, 1871..
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MYRON H. GHAPIN, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Elastic Belts, of which the following is a specification:
Waist-belts for ladies and children, and garters, have been made of an elastic fabric having longitudinal cords of indiarubber introduced among the warps, and secured by the weft-threads in weaving the fabric. These belts are not handsome in appearance, and when the elastic cords are inclosed with silk Warps and weft-threads the same is very expensive. My invention is made for rendering the belt or garter ornamental, and at the same time protecting the elastic from wear, and from undue strain, so as to make the belt more durable and handsome.
I make use of a flat tubular covering of woven fabric for the elastic band or belt, such covering being free from the elastic band eX- cept at or near the ends where the buckles or clasps are applied. rlhis tubular covering is made of a folded strip sewed together length- Wise near the edges, and then turned inside out and the elastic band drawn into the same. The length of the tubular covering is such, in comparison to that of the elastic, that the elastic cannot be distended to such an extent as to injure the saine; and, as the elastic coutracts, the fabric of the tube is shirred or gathered into narrow flutes or plaits; and these render the belt much more handsome,
especially when worn around the waist, than the ordinary elastic fabrics, especially so as silk, satin, and other handsome fabrics can be used; and the tube protects the elastic from perspiration and wear, and when one tube is worn out another can be substituted. This elastic belt or band, inclosed in a separate tubular covering of woven material, is a new and useful article of manufacture.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective Yview of the belt and buckle or clasp 5 and Fig.
2 is a section of the elastic fabric a. and the tubular covering b of woven fabric, with the edges united by the seam c to form such separate inclosing ornamental covering.
I am aware that rubber tubes covered with a Woven or a braided fabric have been used around the Waist, and that elastic bands have been inserted into the fabrics of garments. Neither of these is adapted to use as au ornamental waist-belt.
I claim as my invention- The ornamental waist-belt composed of a fiat elastic band and a separate-tube of silk or other ornamental woven fabric, combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed by me this 7th day of September, 1874.
MYRON H. CHAPIN.
Witnesses GHAs. H. SMITH, HAROLD SERRELL.
