COLLAR SUPPOBTEB. ArrLloA'l mg FILED nov.15, 1910.

COLLAR-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application filed November 15, 1910. Serial No. 592,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST GASPARY, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Altena, in the Province of Westphalia and Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new or im-. proved manufacture of stifieners for ladies collars and the like. Many different forms of such stiffeners have been proposed and it is usual to employ strips of celluloid, metal or similar material sewn or secured to the dress. It hasalso been proposed to employ one or more strips of such material covered with woven or braided material and bent around at the end and bound or secured in the middle. It has further been proposed to employ stiifening strips made of the material known as featherbone and composed of a main central cord and two outer cords of the fiber of quills united by threads applied by winding and stitching. These various stiffeners present drawbacks. Some are liable to buckle in the middle under pressure in use, others will not stand washing; whalebone, for example splits when wet. Moreover in the covered types the stiffening strip is often liable to break and penetrate the covering so as to cause great inconvenience to the wearer.
Now by the present invention I am enabled to obviate these disadvantages and to provide a stiffener which will withstand washing while possessing yielding and supporting qualities which insure perfect coinfort in wear, and without liability for the stiffening material to break or pierce the covering material. For this purpose the invention is characterized by the employment of a body or core of horsehair, preferably in the form of loose lengths. This core is covered with a braided, woven, wound, or other layer of cotton, silk or other material.
extending the full length of the device, but I prefer to make the loops of separate bundles, the free ends of which may extend about half the length of the intermediate stiffening portion. The horsehair cores are covered by a braided layer whichpreferably incloses the eyes of the loops. A separate tubular braided layer may with advantage be provided for each horsehair core when two are employed. The intermediate portion is stiffened by the insertion of a metal wire inside the tubular braided intermediate portion or portions, and by folding and flattening upon the latter a strip of flexible metal and covering the same with cotton, silk or other suitable material, this strip when thus folded forming a flexible metallic casing for the middle part of the stiffener and overlapping the inner ends of the textile covering above mentioned. If desired other means of stiffening the intermediate portion may be employed.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example-a stiffener made according to the invention. 1
Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation and Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles in This is made at the ends with cores a of loose lengths of horsehair bent into loops and extending to about midway of the intermediate portion. 6 is a woven or braided covering of cotton or the like somewhat enlarged at the ends to inclose and cover the eyes of the loops a and likewise extending to about midway of the intermediate portion.
0 is a wire of suit-able length inserted in the, tubular lengths of woven or braided material and d is a strip of pliable metal folded and flattened around the sides of the stifiener togive greater strength and e is a winding of cotton upon the strip d.
If desired the stiffener may be made with only one end loop instead of two.
Having now described my invention I declare that what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A collar support consisting of a bundle of looped horsehairs, a covering forsaid loop, a metallic casing covering a portion of said bundle and a wire within said bundle.
2. A collar support consisting of two loops of horsehair with their ends presented toward each other, a wirebetween andex tending into the end of each loop, and a metal piece inclosing said wire and the ends of said loops.
3. A collar support comprising two covered loops of hair with their ends presented toward each other, a wire entering the end of each loop and a covering holding said loops and said wire together in posit-ion.
4:. A stifiener for ladies collars and like articles consisting of a bundle of horsehairs, formed into a pair of terminal loops and a middle part, a Wire extending at its ends into said loops, coverings for said loops and a casing for said middle part overlapping the inner ends of said loop-coverings.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
