B. A. TODD.
METHOD OF ATTAGHING ELASTIC STRAPS TO WAISTBANDS No. 365,283.
Patented June 21, 1887.
Wgesse s: X I/1m S My.
N. PETERSv PhaloLilIm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD AFTODD, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
METHOD OF ATTACHING ELASTIC STRAPS TO WAISTBANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,283, dated June 21, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. TODD, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching Elastic Straps to W'aistbands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide for child rens short trousers an improved waistband having elastic straps or tabs adapted to be buttoned upon the rear buttons of the shirt to give freedom in bending, and so constructed and attached to the waistband that they will afford the greatest amount of strength and elasticity and can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
The invention consists in attaching the clastic straps or tabs to an extension of the waistband, the straps being held in pockets formed by stitching a covering-flap to the waistband between the straps, and the flap and waistband extension being stitched together through slits in the straps, so as to guide and keep the same in position, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents myimproved waistband applied to a pair of short trousers. Figs. 2 and 3 are front and rear views, respectively, of the elastic strap; and Fig. 4 is a central cross-section through the strap and waistband, showing the method of attachment.
The fabric waistband A, having button-holes B, is stitched to the inside of the trousers C in the usual manner.
To provide for a longer strap, and hence increased elasticity, I form the rear part of the waistband with an extension, A, to the middle part of which the lower ends of the elastic straps D are. securely stitched, as at a. The
lower part of the extension A is then turned up, to form a covering piece or flap over the lower parts of the straps D, and is stitched at its upper edge to the body A of the waist' band. If desired, the flap may be a separate piece stitched to the extension and waistband. The straps Dare each formed of a single piece of the strap, folded at its middle part to form the triangular strengthening-piece d and re turned upon itself, the two parts being stitched to the extension of the waistband at a, as before described. The parts of the strap are stitched together to form the button-hole d and lower slit, d through which latter slit the extension and flap A are stitched together, as shown in Fig. 4. The strap is thus held by the flap from sagging out from the waistband, while its stretching to accommodate the bend of the body is not interfered with. The flap and extension are also stitched together at the sides of the straps. Vith this construction the elastic straps are of a length to give suflicient expansion, are firmly attached to the waistband, are formed with button-holes greatly strengthened by the fold d where they receive the strain from the buttons, and are easily manufactured. N 0 metal parts are used to stain the clothing, and, the strap being on tirely of elastic material, the greatest strength is obtainable with the shortest strap, economy of space being an important feature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method of attaching the elastic straps or tabs to the waistband, which consists in se curing the straps to an extension of the waistband, inclosing the straps within pockets formed by stitching a covering-flap to the waistband between the straps, and in stitching the covering-flap and extension of the waistband together through longitudinal slits formed in the straps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
