FASTENING FOR BELTS, BANDAGES, SLC.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,719, dated August 18, 1885.

Application filed May 21, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH MARY MOORE, residing at Vest Kensington,London, England, have invented new and useful Im` provements in Fastenings for Surgical Belts, Bandages, Stays, Gloves, and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

My object in this invention is to produce a fastening which Will automatically adjust itself to the strains upon it, expanding where the strain is greatest.

The invention Will be best understood by reference to the accompanying` drawings, in which Figure l is a plan ofthe complete fastening; and Fig. 2, an end View of the band or other article to which it is attached, showing how the fastening is inserted.

The fastening consists, essentially, of a cord or piece ot' elastic or equivalent material, A, capable of extension and contraction, fastened at its ends A to the belt or the like, B, and threaded through holes C, which are preferably eyeleted, so that a series of loops or sections, D, are formed, to which the fastening-loops E are loosely attached, so as not to interfere With the free movement of the cord A. The other portion of the article to be fastened carries the buttons, hooks, springcatches, or equivalent, F, over which the one end of the fastening-loops E are placed. The elastic cord A is free to draw through the holes C, so that any one section is capable of drawing from its neighbors and extending farther than would be possible if each section were independent, and thus accommodate it self to the straimwherever it may come, and by this means a much greater range of accomA modation is obtained than would be the ease if each elastic loop were complete in itself and independent of the others.- The loops E need not be elastic.

Instead of threading the cord A through the holes O in the material, it may be run upon the surface of the belt and secured at intervals in such manner as not to interfere with the continuity of its extension and contraction.

the elastic cord A may be repeated upon the fastening side of the material, the buttons or equivalent F being threaded upon or connected with the second cord A just as the loops E are; or a second set of loops E may be threaded on the second cord A, a second set of fastenings E being placed upon the material between the first set of loops E, the fastenings being thus arranged alternately. This latter arrangementis shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.

I claiml. In a fastening such as described, a continuous elastic cord, A, loosely secured to the material to be fastened in loops or sections D, whereby the extension of one loop D may be increased by the yielding of one or more of the others, substantially as specified.

'2. In a fastening such as described,the combination, with a continuous elastic cord, A arranged in loops or sections loops E, secured loosely upon said sections D, whereby the extension of one loop D may be increased by the yielding of the others, substantially as specified.

3. In a fastening such as described, an elastic cord, A, threaded through holes O in the material to which it is applied, and forming loops or sections D, to which the fasteningloops E are secured, substantially as specified.

4. In a fastening such as described, the combination of two elastic cords, A, one for each part of the article to be joined,each cord divided into loops or sections D, carrying the fasteninglloops E, which cross the joint in opposite directions, and are secured by the buttons or equivalent F upon the opposite part of the article, the whole constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
